Haye is the reason I started seriously watching boxing, but the game's up, David.
I think this goes back to 2013:
- I don't believe Haye ducked Tyson Fury in 2013. He was badly injured.
- Haye gave low-key media interviews a few times after the shoulder surgery, talking about how he was going to fight his way back and become mandatory to the top guys, but the comeback didn't happen until 2016, and it wasn't against guys who'd propel him up the rankings.
- Adam Booth walked away sometime between the shoulder surgery and the comeback. I believe it was because Haye kept getting injured and Booth wanted him to retire.
- Haye fought two complete cans in 2016, filling the O2 twice, but backed out of fighting Shannon Briggs in September. He had nothing to fear from a 45 year old Briggs. I think he knew his body wouldn't take a third training camp.
- Haye had clearly not trained properly for Bellew. He was jumping around the ring like an idiot, timing all over the place, even before the injury. He looked like he'd barely sparred at all. He's a notoriously hard trainer, so I suspect that the reason he didn't train properly was that he couldn't.
There's too much evidence here. It's the aborted comebacks in 2014 and 2015, followed by the 9 month gap between fighting Gjergjaj and fighting Bellew that are most telling. His body won't do what he needs it to any more and that's been the case for years.Comment
