  • Comments Thread For: De La Hoya: If I Had Wilder - He'd Be a Star, Joshua Would Beg

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya threw a tremendous verbal hook at the working team behind WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (39-0, 38 KOs). De La HOya's company had promoted Wilder's first 33 fights and took him to a world title. Their relationship ended in January of 2015, after Wilder captured the WBC title with a twelve round unanimous decision over Bermane Stiverne at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

As much as I despise fishnets I have to agree that Wilder'd be much bigger if hed stayed with gbp,(& as much hate as I'll get 4 saying this) I believe he has a much higher ceiling than AJ, as if an American heavyweight is able to accomplish what Tyson did during the 90s & become a ppv star he can become much bigger than AJ whos limited to UK money mostly,& UK ppvs are very cheap.

Wilder has the potential to make fmj money if he becomes a ppv star by beating AJ,he has the loudmouth persona, plenty haters & has atg power in his punches. He's just been lacking in statement victories due to no fault of his own. AJ wouldn't even be as big a star if he was an American,if Wilder was from UK hed be even bigger than AJ by now, I mean ffs the UK ate up mcgimpers "fight" vs may just because hes a loudmouth hypejob bum from Ireland.

I disagree because if gbp would have put him in the ring with someone good his glass would have been shattered

Oscar was too busy drinking and drugging while Richard Schaefer made him into a champion.

Can someone please name one star that Golden Boy has besides Canelo, who is only popular because he's Mexican and by the way also became popular under Richard Schaefer?

Oscar's been running Golden Boy for over two years at this point, going on three years, and has yet to produce a single star under his watch.

The closest thing he's been able to do to that was the rebuild of David Lemieux and even that's a stretch.

                Not true

Did you see the fans booing when AJ vs Takam was stopped?

How about after Haye vs Harrison.

No WAY could you stay protected fighting opposition cherry picked for 7 years and be any kind of "star" in the uk.

American fans seem to think we will just take anything in the uk but it's actually not true, we will turn on our fighters if they aren't stepping to the mark, win lose or draw.

Its actually the american fans who will accept anything just so they can chant "usa" over and over, they dont care who the opponent us as long as their guy is winning, but of course the second they lose they jump off the bandwagon.

Was never going to be long before golden nuts got involved in the conversation.

What’s wrong Oscar, you wondering what the hell you are going to do when the Canelo cash flow dries up? You should be worried, you’ve already got a rep for being crooked even amongst the Mexicans and now there are young promoters with more rep for looking after their fighters coming, like Dana and Hearn. TMT has a better stable it also won’t be long before Hatton promotions gets some traction, he’s building a nice little business in the UK and Conor will be wanting some of the promotional action soon.
