Comments Thread For: Mikey Garcia, Golden Boy To Meet - Discuss Linares Fight Deal

We could be getting one step close to a unification showdown in the lightweight division. Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez and lightweight world champion Mikey Garcia will meet in person on Wednesday in an effort to make a unification fight between Garcia and Jorge Linares early next year. "I want to make the fight, it's a fight that Linares wants and it's a fight Mikey would like too, so let's talk about that, we're ready to do it, it's a great fight and one that I think many fans would like see," said Gomez to ESPN Deportes.

Probably true. Linares is not cared about in the US. His last fight in US against Campbell did only 100k gate with 2500 tickets sold.

"Mikey Garcia, if you're serious about wanting to fight Jorge Linares, call me, without options, without extra fights, in short, without excuses," Gomez wrote.

Goldenboy can just force the mandatory purse bid and force Mikey to fight or vacate, Mikey better answer that phone.

I think its the other way around. Mikey was already aware that Linares was mandated by the WBC so there was no need to sign the Cotto contract just to get the Linares fight. The only thing GB is hoping for is that it doesn't go to purse bid and Mikey and Showtime put on the fight. GB wants to be the one to promote the fight but, in reality Linares isn't a draw, there's a reason why Linares has mostly been fighting in the UK on shows that weren't promoted by GB.

GB is hoping to get a deal done so it won't go to purse bid and they lose out on promoting the fight. They already know that Showtime and Haymon would probably outbid them and that Mikey would get a 70/30 split if GB would try to win the purse bid.

So.....he passed on a Cotto fight knowing he would still fight Linares and still risking an L without the Cotto payday -- which would of been his career high purse? wouldn't it be funny if he gets beat by Linares, how would that look? pretty dumb if you ask me.
