Comments Thread For: WBA Prez Hopes To Eliminate Multiple Title Problem By Mid-2019

The president of the World Boxing Association, Gilberto Mendoza Jr., acknowledged that it has not been easy to reduce the number of multiple world titles in his sanctioning body. In several divisions, there is a WBA "regular" champion or the secondary champion, and then there is the WBA "super" champion, who is regarded by most as the true champion - but that's the case in every division.

Having a clear demarcation for the #1 contender, who the champion should be mandated to fight quickly, is a great idea. The only issue is calling them "champion" when there is already a champion. What it should be is a necklace, or a bracelet, or a scarf or something. The "#1 contender necklace." That way, everyone knows who the mandatory is to the champion, but it avoids the problem of having two champions.

FYI, if he really wanted to get rid of multiple titles, he wouldn't have just issued a new one to Murata right after consolidating Jacobs and GGG's belts. That shows he's not even trying.

If he has any integrity, he would name Oquendo the mandatory to Joshua instead of creating a 2nd title in that division. With Ortiz removed from his mandatory slot it shouldn't create any issues. Instead we're gonna get 2 inactive 40+ year olds without a shred of relevance in the division fighting for a "world title". It's shambolic.

Mid-2019 lmfao. Wut the f#ck is the problem with having these guys who hold titles just fight each other? This has been going on for awhile & they still need 20-ish months to figure this sh^t out?!?!?

They should just treat the World belt as the interim belt. Then have the Super Belt. No reason to have the Super Champ, World Champ and Interim Champ.
