Comments Thread For: Joe Smith's Broken Jaw is Healing Well, Return Eyed For February

According to promoter, Joe DeGuardia, light heavyweight Joe Smith is recovering well from the broken jaw he suffered at the hands of Sullivan Barrera on July 15th at the Forum in Inglewood, California. Smith gamely fought on for much of the fight with that ailment in losing a ten round decision. It was a loss that disrupted the momentum he had from a banner 2016.

Big fan of this guy and he's great for American Boxing especially as he could fill the gap left by Kelly Pavlik and attract that Blue Collar White working class fan.

He definitely needs a better trainer as he's still very raw but at 27 years old he's got time on his hands.

Also his Promoter/Manager are terrible...he beats two Top 10 Light Heavyweights in Fonfara and Hopkins and didn't get a World Title Fight from it...i mean WTF!!!!

Nowadays some guys get two or three World title shots without ever beating Top 10 guys and this guy can't even get one....NEED NEW MANAGEMENT!

Problem is, he's not with one of the big players like Top Rank, Goldenboy or Al Haymon so he's not got any bargaining power.

Those Promoters won't match him with one of their guys unless they are forced to by mandatories and his present Promoter obviously doesn't have the connections or money to put him in a final eliminator.

In both his losses, he had his jaw broken and you can tell he keeps his head up too straight so a bit of fine tuning on his defence by a top trainer and this kid could really be something.

He needs to throw straight more instead of wide hooks. Roach or May Sr, or even Abel Sanchez could whip this kid into something.

I agree. I think Eubank Jr has the same problem, same with wilder.

Wilder getting better but those looping hooks take a lot of time to land. If they fight someone high caliber they would get jabbed all night.

              Good shout there.

He's basically got the same type of problem with his trainer that Chris Algeri had with that fool he had in his corner for Pac fight.

These kind of trainers can handle club fighters and teach the basics but they can't teach a fighter or correct his faults beyond at World level.

Damn thats one tough dude. I did not know he had a broken jaw going into the fight then fought all 10 rounds that way. He was taking some serious shots too. Impressive how tough he is.
