Comments Thread For: Schaefer: Santa Cruz-Mares Rematch Tentatively Set for March

Richard Schaefer repeatedly emphasized Wednesday that Abner Mares' upcoming fight against Andres Gutierrez is anything but a tune-up. Leo Santa Cruz's fight against Chris Avalos scheduled for that same night, October 14, in Carson, California on paper appears to be significantly easier than Mares' matchup. Nevertheless, Schaefer confirmed during a conference call to promote their FOX doubleheader that there's an agreement in place for the Santa Cruz-Mares rematch to take place if Santa Cruz and Mares win their fights a week from Saturday night.

So a tune up to rematch a guy that's barely a level above tune up at this point in his career? They're just trying to milk the Mexican vs Mexican angle because this is not a quality fight.

I like both guys and hope it's a good fight. I hope Abner brings his A game. He's going to need it! I still got Leo winning this.

The Tune Up is useless though. Thought the first fight was good but I look Forward to seeing what Mares can do in a rematch with Robert Garcia as his trainer.

Hopefully they load up the Card!

From the sounds of it this fight isn't happening now merely cuz "there'll be more money available next year when budgets are replenished". So yea this tune up card is useless for any reason a fan would or should give a f#ck about. I don't really expect a strong card here for that reason. These strong co-headliner type cards tend to not be great overall cards in general it seems too historically more often then not.

I like both fighters I hope Abner wins. Maybe he learned from the last fight and gets the job done. I don't know that I'd wanna see a trilogy though if Abner won.

There will be an eventual rematch in my opinion. But I wanna see more guys in this stacked division mix it up. Rematches are great but don't go to the well to much.

I wanna see Selby, Valdez, Jo Jo Diaz, and Jesus Rojas mix it up with Mares, Santa Cruz, Russell Jr., and Frampton.

Hopefully in 2018 we see some cross road matches instead of the same dance over and over again.
