Yikes...
He went life and death with Lara, result was highly controversial. Also fought him at a CaneloWeight, I mean catchweight of 155.
He went life and death with Trout and the result was highly controversial.
Chavez Jr is shot to ***** and was never more than a C level fighter. (That gets you 0 credit)
Also fought at a catchweight.
Kirkland was shot to ***** and was at his best a C level fighter. Also fought at a CaneloWeight, I mean catchweight of 155.
Angulo was shot to ***** and was at his best a C level fighter. Also fought at a catchweight.
Cotto well past his prime, considerably smaller (about 10 pounds) and went the distance in a good fight. Decent win, solid win...but nothing special as Cotto was years past his prime and much smaller than Canelo. Canelos best win.
GGG, I watched but was quite faded so I didn’t score round by round so I can’t say who won, I though it was extremely close and maybe thought GGG had a very, very small edge.
Canelos most impressive fight.
Basically he’s a huge PPV star, at the peak of his earning power, very carefully matched by golden boy in order to maximize profits and limit risk.
(Essentially what is wrong with boxing)
Catchweights should be fought maybe once in a fighters career when a super fight is to be made with a fighter in another division. Canelo, prior to the GGG fight had fought 6 of his last 7 fights at a catchweight. That is because he relies on a massive size advantage over his opponents to compensate for what are mediocre boxing skills... not the first fighter to do it, every division has a few fighters like that in it... México historically has had ALOT of fighters like that.
Everytime he stepped up, he either lost, drew, or had controversial wins... he’s been pro for I think 12-13 years and his biggest win is a UD (wide I’ll admit) over a smaller, well past his prime Cotto.
Shane Mosley, who neither of us mentioned was also shot when Canelo fought him.
Overall resume quality when actually looked at between the lines in an unbiased and factual manner...not very good. To a casual... very good resume.
