How does that happen? I know of a few NBA players with diabetes but they have had it since they were born.

When you have a lot of mass, the heart sometimes has a hard time supporting it all. My BP goes up significantly when I gain mass. Even lean mass.
I don't entirely know what's up with him though so I'm not excusing him. I think he's a lot older than his given age.

It can be caused from many reasons. It can actually be hereditary. Age too, which is probably more likely in the case of Ortiz.

Maybe his size, he isn't fat but he's still a big lump of a man and maybe his heart struggles with it.

Just because you're a pro athlete doesn't mean you're immune from things like high blood pressure.

Too much sodium in your diet. If you exercise and workout regularly but you eat a lot of processed foods, your kidneys struggle to maintain normal blood pressure. There's a saying, you can't out work a bad diet.

Can be genetic...I have high BP and I'm 10% BF, my pops has it too. I have about 60lb of muscle on my dad who is same height as me but we both have high BP, and his BF is probably 8-9%.

Well i suppose every athlete doesn't disclose their medical history in public. Or maybe they declare their medications for genuine illness to the drug testers, so they're aware and it's not an issue.

Another thing is that there is also certain things in the medications that keep getting added to the list of what's banned and what isn't. You could be taking a prescription medication that contains something that becomes banned but was perfectly legal before that.

Some people are pron to have high blood pressure even if they are an athlete and eat right. I know I am pron to high blood pressure. I have always exercised and stayed lean but I still have to watch my salt intake and stay on medication to keep my blood pressure normal. Boxers can have high blood pressure just like anyone else. A lot of it is genetics.
