GGG, Kovalev, and Chocolatito: their stamina and reflexes have all declined very early and very quickly, and they all train, or have trained, at Big Bear 6,000+ feet above sea level.

Maybe Victor Conte and Virgil Hunter were right in their theory about how the muscle fibers cannot properly repair themselves at high altitude without the necessary oxygen content in the air, and that this is the reason for GGG's decline. If GGG's team is smart, they will look study the science on this before their next training camp.

Is that why GGG was pushing the pace in the Canelo fight for 12 rounds and didnt take a back step. Is that why Canelo gassed under the pressure and pace presented by GGG?

I'm not dis*****g GGG still has better stamina than Canelo. But why did GGG's punches get super slow towards the end of rounds in the second half of the fight? that never used to happen. He recovered well between rounds but his arms were definitely getting fatigued. Even Kelly Pavlik said before this fight that GGG looked old and "army weary" to him.

Bottom line, GGG used to have the best stamina in the sport in terms of punch output. He was doing what Leo Santa Cruz was doing, only at a much higher weight class where it is more difficult, and with much more power on his shots. He threw 800 punches in 8 rounds vs Curtis Stevens, but vs Canelo he threw only 700 in 12 rounds, and even with the much lower output, you still saw his punches getting much slower. Even three years ago vs Martin Murray, GGG showed much better stamina. But against Jacobs and Canelo, Abel has had to tell him, "you took that last round off on me," or "don't take off the last 30 seconds of the round, that's very important," and yet GGG hasn't been able to do it because he's getting tired. He gave away late rounds to both Jacobs and Canelo and even if he still should have won vs Canelo, it did cost him "officially."

Canelo has always had mediocre stamina. GGG used to have amazing stamina, but it's gone down to just "good" or "very good." Kovalev also used to have very good stamina, now it's gone down to mediocre or plain bad, we will see. Chocolatito used to have some of the best stamina in the sport, but like GGG in his last few fights, Chocolatito has fought more in spurts that has given away rounds, and it's the reason he lost vs Sor Rung Visi in the first fight.

So I agree with you GGG still has better stamina than Canelo, but I am also noticing decline in the stamina of all these fighters, and they all have Big Bear in common, so their teams should really look into whether training at high elevation is a good idea. Why not train in elevation during the day by using an elevation room, but sleep at sea level for better rest and recovery? That's what Andre Ward does, and what Jacobs did for the GGG fight, and it seemed to work very well.

GGG is 35. Roy jones jr was getting koed cold at 35. Body is no longer in their prime at 35. Mayweather didn't have the same legs either at 35.
