Comments Thread For: Golovkin's Coach: Mayweather's Win Should NOT Count as 50

Abel Sanchez, best known as the trainer for IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, disagrees with the Nevada State Athletic Commission sanctioning Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor as an official boxing match. Last month at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Mayweather snapped a two year retirement to fight McGregor, a UFC champion with zero experience as a pro boxer.

His reasons are weak: "Conor was an amateur". What about every fighter's first pro debut fight? It's nearly always against someone who has a streak of losses with little skills, but they still count.

I disagree. McGregor took the fight seriously and respected the sport by actually training to win and fighting to win. Unlike the way James Toney went into MMA like it was a big joke and embarrassed both sports. Floyd unquestionably deserves this win on his books for a final tally of 46-3 with 1 no contest and he should go down in history as one of the top 5 Jr. Welterweights/Super Lightweights in the history of the 140lb weight class.

How does that work? Should people go back and remove all the bums fought on ever fighters records? Why should they count at the front of a career but not the end? Should the losses to bums on fighters records that fought too long be removed also?

Hopkins loss in his first fight doesn't count. Both guys were 0-0

Bullsh*, Toney trained for that fight just as much as Conor trained for Floyd. Difference is Toney was way past his prime, already suffering from the health effects of his long boxing career. Plus, UFC knew this and only brought him in to embarrass boxing
