Comments Thread For: Golovkin's Promoter: GGG's Legacy at Stake in Canelo Rematch

Promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, who handle IBF, WBA, WBC, IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs), is hoping that a deal can be reached sooner than later for a rematch with Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs).

Let's see if it's Loeffler who is the one reaching to hit the "deal." $5 they will insinuate in the negotiatins, "hey look (GBP) the "people" say GGG won... I did too...I just think Gennady deserves a little bit more so that I can be happy as a promoter."

We don't want to wait too long... but we will wait too long.

If they go straight to the Canelo rematch, it needs to happen in march. Otherwise, they should fight Saunders first.

Also isn't this whole middleweight defense record total bull****? Aren't they counting an interim title or something? Very disappointed that with all the potential GGG had in his prime to win historic fights, all Loeffler has gotten for GGG to hang his hat on now that his prime is up is a fake "title defense record" that represents quantity, not quality, anyway, and that GGG may not even be able to reach anyway at 36 years old if they wait all the way until May.

And Abel is happy with GGG's performance? Really? More bad news for GGG fans, since I definitely wasn't happy with it. Yeah he won because of his jab, but no one paid 70 bucks to see a jabber and that's it, people paid 70 bucks to see GGG the monster combination punching power punching knockout machine who hits guys with fast, explosive, clean punches every round. But the speed was gone, he looked even more past his prime than Pacquiao did against Mayweather (probably because that was a USADA fight, this was a VADA fight, but that's no consolation for the paying fan. Maybe they should switch to USADA for the rematch then if that's what it takes to deliver the fight that was advertised), so that guy was nowhere to be found.

I was hopeful they would switch up his training camp, and get him an environment where his muscles can recover during rest with sea level amounts of oxygen in the air like the muscles need, so he could get back to prime form for the rematch, but if they're going to wait all the way until May to fight again, and Abel is happy with what he saw, then both those things give me far less hope of that happening.

I think that Team Golovkin should just cut their losses and move on because they owe Golden Boy nothing at this point. So what is there left for them to prove? In the eyes of the boxing public Gennady has already defeated Canelo Alvarez. A rematch seems pointless and useless at this time unless they are wiling to just cash GGG out. If he can beat him once then chances are he could easily do it again. Besides, GGG is now showing signs of decline, age and wear and tear. It's time for him to either unify all of the major title belts and become the undisputed champion of the 160 lbs division or move up to the 168 lbs division, in order to reinvigorate himself.

Mexico needs to ramp up Constitution Day as a bigger deal (early Feb).

Then Canelo would fight in Feb, May (Cinco de Mayo) and Sept (Independence day).

Sounding like you're afraid GGG will do worse in the rematch... which is very likely how it will go down. I'm very skeptical he'll all the sudden fix his glaring mistakes from the first fight. Old boxers rarely ever change their style toward the last half/third/fourth of their careers. But we will find out within the next year.
