Comments Thread For: Golovkin-Canelo and The Predictable Controversy

By Tris Dixon - IN the end we got what we wanted but we had to take it with one hand while accepting what we least desired with the other. Gennady Golovkin-Saul Canelo' Alvarez was riveting rather than wild, captivating rather than scintillating, but as a fight that is good enough. Yet when it was all over it was the scorecards that were causing the fight to trend on social media, not the performances of the boxers. Two scorecards were plausible but one, belonging to Adalaide Byrd, was simply outrageous...

The problem is complete lack of accountability and almost nonexistent revision of the decisions. NSAC should get 3 independent judges approved by both teams to review the match and make their decision count instead of Byrd's. If all done right, Canelo should have L. Narrow, but L.

I honestly saw no controversy over a draw in this fight besides that horrendous score card that judge turned in for canelo.

The 1st 3 rounds canelo was out boxing ggg easily who looked surprisingly timid. But then canelo gassed out on que faster than Mcgregor and ggg was applying pressure not super effective pressure but enough to win him the rounds.

In the middle rounds canelo was to busy doing his favorite mayweather impression by making his opponents miss but he was not making them pay. So ggg was winning those rounds. Then canelo would come in and fight in spurts. Then ggg would hunt him down and land a couple of shots then canelo would occasionally land some in return. Some rounds where give I take so that's why I think there is no problem with the draw but that judge needs to be removed.

Whether you preferred stoic Golovkin’s pressure, intensity or more clinical approach or Canelo’s more flashy punches, pluckiness and composure under fire it was close. It was a quality bout between two top-drawer boxers. The majority may have scored narrowly for Golovkin.
The vast majority of the press row scores were not narrow Golovkin.

Canelo was competitive early but gassed quite quickly. He spent the rest of the bout fighting for ~30-45 seconds each round, usually early, and then trying to hide on the ropes as if he was in survival mode. Frankly, Danny Jacobs turned in a much more impressive performance against GGG than Canelo.

This was an easy fight to score. I don't see how any competent judge could give Canelo more than five rounds, and that's being generous by a round in my book. Frankly, Dave Moretti turned in the only scorecard that was credible.

That fight was not a draw. 8/4 ggg 7/5 if you were drunk. If you didn't see ggg have effective aggression all night with Canella going backwards all night then you do not know the criteria to score

Canella fought 30 seconds a round the rest was moving backwards eating jabs and dodging right hands. Many jabs landed many rights landed and he made many rights miss then he would come alive and counter to little to late.

Controversy is now boxing’s default setting
Excellent article. And the above quote is 100% true. The whole system needs to be overhauled.

GGG outlanded Canella in 10 out of 12 rounds. All the top boxing websites you would know which if you were a fan have polls ggg won by 70% on polls
