20 year old David Benavidez fights for his first world title this Friday night on SHO

20 year old David 'El Bandera Roja' Benavidez fights for his first world title this Friday night on Showtime. I'm super excited for his potential.

Here's a look back at his last fight against Rogelio 'Porky' Medina:

Shame about the opponent, but puts him in a great position so early in his career.

Would have loved to see him give the bidness to Dirrell, though it could have been a tough fight for him.

he's a fantastic offensive fighter for a 20 year old. questions still remain about his chin and his ability to last in tough situations, but i'm excited about him as a prospect come contender. great combinations, good handspeed, and the power looks for real. porky has been a durable fighter in the past.

as amazing as it is, these gusy get to title shots without being proven because somebody like dirrell's little brother can get and hold a title in this era. we still won't know 100% what he's got because dirrell just isn'tt hat good, but he'll fjnction as a gatekeeper in spite of the fact that he's a "world champion."

      because boxing.

Definitely needs some defensive adjustments if he is going to have a long career. Offensively he has everything, and due to it being a weak SMW era I can see him beating everyone even at this age and with the flaws he has.

Also, unfortunately Dirrell pulled out of the fight with injuries and DB is now facing some guy called Gavril who i havent seen or heard of before.

So in reality Medina will still be his biggest step up, but with a title he shouldnt have too much trouble getting opponents, and it puts him in a good position to fight the WBSS winner next year.

I agree with New England and Tom Cruise about this guy. I look forward to watching his career progression but he needs to tighten some stuff up. Hey he's only 20 so the sky is the limit. Hopefully, he can unify at 168 before he goes up to 175.

Hopefully he has to travel to the UK to get those unifications.

I would 100% go to that. I just love watching this guy fight.

I would like to see him get on his jab more. I saw somewhere that GGG said his jab gives brain damage when they spar lol. He will never be a defensive wizard as long as he is so focussed on hurting people, but with a consistent jab he can use his size to keep opponents out of range. Aslo a bit too reliant on high guard while sitting on the ropes, though unlike his brother Jose he counters well out of that position.

Not expecting the most competitive fight next for David, but looking forward to seeing him fight again regardless. He one of the most exciting prospects in the sport today for me. Look forward to see him fight better & better guys.

I'd love to see him vs Ramirez sometime next year. The fact Arum passed on promoting David is a fun lil side fact to him fighting any TR guy.
