Comments Thread For: Canelo Says Past Sparring With Golovkin Means Nothing

Several years ago in Big Bear, California, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) had a much talked about sparring session at the Summit Gym with Gennady Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs). The two have gone on to bigger and better things and now they meet on September 16th in what is a highly anticipated clash that will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

i get skills get better but your body is your body..and when getting hit by vicious body shots that hurt you in sparring will hurt you even more in the real fight.

1st abel says the sparring would be different like if they didn't look good in sparring & now nelo saying he is not the same kid when they sparred in big bear as if he didn't look good in sparring either....interesting....as for the body shots I saw from the Jacobs fight landing on golovkin he was feeling it & didn't like them & nelo has good work rate to the body, I say nelo wins on the cards.

At what point was Golovkin hurt to the body in the Jacobs fight?

When someone says our past sparring means nothing, it means they got their ****in ass kicked

It's like when a guy tells you that a fight "didn't finish". What he means is I took a beating and didn't get to fight back.

Golovkin/Sanchez aren't idiots, no part of them would assume Canelo was the same as he was 7 years ago !

As for body attack, doesn't matter who it is, a consistent assault on the body in the first few rounds is going to impact them later on. They are both known for vicious body shots, and my money is that Golovkin hits harder to the body than Canelo does, so question will be frequency and accuracy.

Canelo looks like he's bulked up in the mid-section quite a bit, but for me he looks a bit muscle bound, so wouldn't surprise me if Canelo gassed around the 9th, and if so, will have to get his licks in early while he is fresh meantime avoiding equal fire coming back at him.

For me, Canelo needs to pack a lot into the first 6 rounds and wear Golovkin down materially by the middle of the fight - can imagine Canelo over the first half, then Golovkin late. But early fight my money is on Golovkin keeping the distance behind the jab and only exchanging selectively. To do damage over the first 6 Canelo will have to navigate the jab or hope that Golovkin moves into range with some frequency. Depends if Golovkin lets that happen, or if Canelo can make it happen.

What was it that was said by Abel or Gennady?

From what I've heard them say, not too long ago, was that the sparring session doesn't mean anything, that it was sparring and that's it. That Canelo was young back then and that he has grown and is a lot better fighter today.

So did I miss something that was said?

It doesn't even say in this article what the reporter told Canelo about what Abel or GGG said.

He's right. I have no idea why anyone still talks about this. Canelo was a baby, and they were sparring.

Do I have to link Iverson's 'practice' rant in here?
