Comments Thread For: Joe Cortez: McGregor Has Good Shot, Mayweather Could Get Old

The referee recruited to teach Conor McGregor the rules involved in boxing believes he would be a world champion if he had pursued the sport instead of MMA. America's Joe Cortez, who worked four of Floyd Mayweather's fights, including the 2007 defeat of Ricky Hatton, spent six weeks in McGregor's training camp as he prepares for Saturday's fight with Mayweather at Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena.

...he's got all the ingredients to be an excellent, excellent fighter.
This could be said of literally thousands of young boxers. Most won't become world champions.

If McGregor had dedicated himself to boxing, he might have rose through the ranks to become a world champion. And he might not have. Nobody will ever know because that's not the path he took.

    His conditioning is superb...
Correction: Conor is in great shape but his conditioning and stamina are questionable. He gassed in both Diaz fights.

You can be ripped but not able to sustain 12 rounds of competitive boxing.

He can punch, and he's not going to be afraid to go in there and mix it up if he has to.
And when he mixes it up, he's in for a world of hurt if he doesn't understand that the other guy can punch too.

McGregor knows how to cut the ring, and get him in a corner. He can catch him and hurt him.
We don't know what McGregor knows how to do and what he's capable of. This is his first professional boxing match.

Although McGregor seemingly has little chance to win, if Mayweather looks old in the ring and can't pull the trigger much, then Conor will definitely win.

Floyd's fabulous pharmaceuticals will ensure plenty of youth through this fight. No chance of his "getting old" today.

          Money May.

Plus his opponent can't box. There's that.

When this fight is over and done with ( thank god tonight) there will be more talk about McGregor having a boner at the weigh in than the fight itself.

Macgregor camp is paying him good money. Probably the easiest pay check of Cortez's life. Of course he's gonna be complimentary, but even he qualifies his statement with "If Mayweather got old".

He's got a lot of confidence in himself?

Well so did Rousey in her boxing before her last fights.

Just saying, that its not really an attribute here (though can be a negative).
