    Does Rigondeaux really smoke cigarettes?

I heard he does which would make what he does in the ring even more amazing. Anyone know the truth?

Dont know but I am interested as well.

Reminds me of legendary Japanese MMA fighter, Sakuraba. Man drank whiskey and smoked cigars when he wanted. Yet he had crazy stamina, once fought Royce Gracie with special rules (match ending only in TKO or submission) for one hour and half. 90 damn minutes. And after that he fought another match, and that was against a heavyweight... He himself was a middleweight fighter

How about James Toney by the way? Didnt he smoke quite a bit of cigars as well?

I read the John Brinn Butler book on Rigo, A Cuban Boxer's Journey and if I am not mistaken John mentioned that Rigo smoked while in Cuba. I vaguely remember something like that.

          Really?

He's Cuban. Of course he likes the smell of tobacco. Pretty sure there were pictures of him wearing white linen, a straw hat on a beach...smoking...going around on Twitter.

Don't know if does now but by his own admission when he was an amateur He drank (Bucanero) and chain smoked after he was banned from boxing! I believe it was around 2007 prior to the 2008 Olympics. Rigondeaux and Erislandy Lara attempted to defect during the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. Their story or so they claimed was to have been drugged and abducted from the Pan American Village, though the Turkish-German former pro middleweight Ahmet Oner. Later it was discovered that both fighters had signed contracts with Oner's company Arena Box Promotions.

Rigondeaux was banned from the Olympics (he was favored to medal). His State car was repossessed. His salary was stopped and he was placed on Government surveillance. His friends and family were forced to stay away from him or face retribution. And his father disowned him to boot!

In February 2009, Rigondeaux successfully escaped from Cuba. It is unclear who exactly paid for the boxer's passage. But it is rumored he escaped via high speed Mexican Cartel drug running boats. Rigondeaux went from Mexico City to Miami, and his professional career began.

So if he picked up a few bad habits along the way give the man a pass!

Sounds like the makings of a good movie JMHO!

I heard Thurman puffs he odd cigarette too. Don’t know how it doesn’t affect their stamina.

Nicolino Locche supposedly smoked a lot.

Numerous Argentine sources also cite the fact that Locche's approach towards submitting himself to traditional boxing training and discipline was sometimes lackadaisical. For example, Locche was a known habitual cigarette smoker throughout most if not all of his boxing career and his adherence to the strict dietary requirements of his trade was often quite flexible.

It used to be widespread in football. Croatian football player Robert Prosinečki smoke the red marlboros all the time

"He'd smoke before the game, at half-time in the showers and after the game as well. Red Marlboros, too. The real heavy stuff."

Would explain why he does so little each round as he might actually have stamina issues. So he fights defensively and takes a ton of breaks.
