The misconception that past fighters fought more than 3-4x's a year

The past few years or so, a lot of folks get on fighters for not fighting enough. That they should getting 3 to 4 fights a year and because guys from the last fought more. Well, not so fast.

Unless you go back to the Sugar Robinson days and hell, he's fought twice in a month before.

Just counting guys in their peak years. Ray Leonard fought 3 times a year once. Thomas Hears 3 times twice and 4 times once. De La Hoya had a five fight year once.

Guys right now seem right om schedule with the 80s and 90s guys for the most part.

Four times is too much. Two times is fine. 3x is even better, ie, Crawford. Once a year, man, they better start looking for a regular job. These people don't belong in this sport.

Interesting that you took Hearns and Leonard, but chose to exclude Duran and Haggler whose names belong in the same sentence. Why? Because the fact that they fought 3 or 4 times a year MANY times discredits your point.

I don't really have a dog in this fight but if you're going to prove a point, don't be so obviously selective because it kills your credibility.

I only named 3 fighters. I didn't research everyone. Hell I say Oscar fought 5 times in a year.

I think once you get in the top 10 of your division, 2 or 3 fights a year is fine.

2 times a year at the top level is the idea...unless you want them fighting lower level fighters

MORE than 3-4x a year? Which implies that modern top fighters are fighting 3-4 a year? We feel spoiled when they fight twice a year.

I think you are looking at too small a sample size. I think if you looked at the top ten P4P from today, 15 years ago & 30 years ago you'd see more fights per year in their previous 12 month period the further you go back.

No it was like 9 I think , but I was talking once they reach contender status. Of course a young fighter will fight more at the beginning stages of a career.
