Comments Thread For: Ellerbe: Smaller Gloves Will Have Impact on Mayweather-McGregor

As reported earlier on BoxingScene.com, Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor will wear 8-ounce boxing gloves for their highly anticipated fight on Aug. 26. Mayweather and McGregor requested the smaller size earlier this month instead of the usual 10-ounce gloves in their 154-pound bout. Both fighters submitted a waiver to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, who approved the request on Wednesday morning.

after 3 rounds those 8 oz gloves will feel like 8 lb a hand on Connor not used to that... I'm quite certain the gloves will be Grant, which is what Floyd always uses, and as long as he has not slipped that much those Lightning Fast hands will beat a tattoo on Connors face that he is never experienced I see Connor going down around round 6, but all depends on just what Floyd wants to do... not happy with Robert Byrd being named the ref he has slowed down tremendously in the past couple of years and has shown a lack of being able to be on top of the fighters to break them on a consistent basis

“Floyd wants him to have every advantage possible that he can have,” Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe told MMA Junkie.

So let him wear horsehair gloves then.

This signals that Floyd is looking for a knock out. I am expecting to see a sadistic side of May come August 26 in the ring with Conor McGregor. I expect him to try and hurt and punish him. Floyd has to deliver because he has to give the people their money's worth.

that nonsense is about as real as Mayweather wanting to clean up the sport

they know the casuals will lap it up, and yet 8oz gloves will not make the slightest difference to Conor

he does have a nasty streak, but not sure we will see it in this fight

my thinking was..... that Floyd will box Mac early, just like he does everyone else..... he will adjust to Conor's distance/form/timing and then go to work picking him apart, maybe stepping on the gas a little if he see's Mac hurt or badly faded

but, considering the fact that Floyd seems to have been working on sitting on his punches..... and considering the fact that McGregor does not have a lot of experience..... and now with 8oz gloves..... Mayweather could take a similar approach to the Mosley fight

Mosley was supposed to take it to Mayweather, and throw the sink/fridge/washing machine - along with anything else that wasn't nailed down, at Mayweather..... and Floyd was supposed to run for his life.....

instead, Floyd walked to the middle of the ring and planted his feet, punching it out with Mosley..... completely wrecking Shane's plan A within the first few minutes of the fight

he could take a similar approach early..... to wreck McGregor's gameplan/confidence and never let him settle..... then box him, picking him apart, frustrating him..... and possibly walking him down late, just like he did with Mosley

if you are going to take any kind of risk then early is the way to go..... possibly turning the fight in your favor immediately, but having plenty of time to right the ship if it doesn't work out.... like when Mosley landed that hook

I actually tend to lean that way..... I think that Mayweather will plant his feet with McGregor, at least early..... he knows Mac could not hurt Paulie

you could be right, Floyd could put it on McGregor...... but I also would not be surprised to see a nice safe clinical boxing lesson

unfortunately, it will happen however Mayweather decides..... but I agree with your last comment, Mayweather knows fans got shafted a little in the Pac fight..... some say that Pac did not deliver, and they are correct, but there is a reason why Mayweather took no risks whatsoever with Manny..... not sure if that will apply to Conor

              and Mosley power/speed > McGregor's power/speed

Floyds gonna feel connor's hands and think he's being hit by sledgehammers.

he has fought bigger punchers than McGregor wearing 8oz gloves

Connor is the hardest puncher Floyd has ever fought. There is no comparison.
