Anthony Joshua 'almost certain' to fight Kubrat Pulev next after Wladimir Klitschko's retirement as Eddie Hearn reveals Cardiff as probable venue

Anthony Joshua is ‘almost certain’ to fight Kubrat Pulev next after Wladimir Klitschko’s retirement on Thursday, with Cardiff’s Principality Stadium the frontrunner to stage the bout this winter.

Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn had an agreement with the IBF, whose title belongs to Joshua, for the heavyweight champion to face Pulev, his mandatory challenger, if the Klitschko rematch collapsed.

With Klitschko announcing his departure, Hearn told Sportsmail that his intention is to stage the fight with Pulev on October 28 or November 11, with Cardiff under consideration for the October date and Las Vegas in the frame for November.

Cardiff is slightly more likely for what would be Joshua’s first fight since his remarkable stoppage win over Klitschko for the IBF and WBA belts in April.

Hearn told Sportsmail: ‘We have an agreement in place with the IBF that if it wasn’t Klitschko it would be Pulev. It will almost certainly be Pulev next.

‘We need to sort out the final details but the venues don’t change. It will still be Vegas or Cardiff, with Cardiff probably the frontrunner. The date will be the same as well – probably October 28 or November 11, because ideally we would like AJ to fight again in February or March so he can have three fights in 2018.’

Pulev, from Bulgaria, lost an IBF title challenge to Klitschko in 2014 - his sole defeat in a career of 25 wins and one loss, with 13 knockouts. He beat Dereck Chisora last year to win the European crown.

On Klitschko, who retires after a decade at the top of the heavyweight division, Hearn said: ‘We are obviously disappointed from an event perspective because the rematch was huge, but from a personal perspective I am happy for Wladimir.

‘He has had a tremendous career and leaves with a great legacy, in great health and with everything he needs in life. He could have made millions for this fight but he already has millions.

‘Sometimes a fighter goes in the gym and after a couple of weeks realises the hunger just isn’t there. That is when you have problems, but Wladimir knows in himself that this is the right time and I wish him nothing but the best.’

A.J is a genius, perhaps his clause with the IBF tipped him off : that he couldn't fight anyone else but his mandatory.

Not a bad fight. Definitely would've preferred Ortiz or Wilder but Pulev is a legitimate top 10 heavyweight fighter with a good jab.

Cardiff the frontrunner to stage Joshua bout with mandatory challenger Pulev

Anthony Joshua's next fight against mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev is expected to be confirmed within the coming week.

Anthony Joshua's next fight against mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev is expected to be confirmed within the coming week.

The IBF and WBA heavyweight champion had on Wednesday reiterated his preference for a rematch with Wladimir Klitschko in Las Vegas, but the Ukrainian on Thursday announced his immediate retirement at 41 years old.

Joshua's promoters Matchroom had the necessary logistics in place for Klitschko to simply sign for a date of November 11 at the T-Mobile Arena, so any fight with Bulgaria's Pulev is similarly straightforward.

Vegas had appeared the likeliest venue, and while it remains an option, Press Association Sport understands Cardiff's Principality Stadium on October 28 is again the favourite.

If that is the case it means Joshua could even begin his training camp as soon as Saturday.

His preference is to train for 12 weeks in the build-up to a fight, even if the first two are not quite as intense, and Saturday represents 12 weeks from October 28. Should Las Vegas on November 11 instead be confirmed, Joshua has already said preparations will officially begin on August 22.

Asked by Press Association Sport about the Bulgarian, the 27-year-old Joshua responded: "Pulev's a good fight. Look how (aggressively) he came to fight Klitschko (in a five-round stoppage defeat in 2014).

"He came with his heart on his sleeve. It may not be the fan favourite fight, but it's one we need to get through to get to better things."

Freddie Cunningham of AJ Boxing added: "The two dates have always been discussed, and are still both in play. Things are going to have to move quickly, as we already knew: within the next week.

"Fighters need time to have their camp, so they need a date. This Saturday will be 12 weeks, though he's been ticking over, he is in a good place anyway.

"The 11th is still an option, but if it isn't then, that's brought all our timelines forward two weeks.

"When we met with the Vegas group, they were very positive on Anthony and either opponent; they just want to get Anthony over there. Vegas is definitely not ruled out.

"Everyone knew time was ticking and Klitschko hadn't said anything; the longer it went on the more doubt there was.

"This makes it all a little bit easier; it focuses the mind now for everyone.

"(The venue surrounds the) consideration for the fans and what's best for them."

Pulev's only defeat came against Klitschko in 2014. Among his 25 victories was a split-decision over Joshua's compatriot Dereck Chisora for the European title in May last year.

He is also promoted by the Sauerland brothers, who Matchroom's Eddie Hearn has long worked with.

Hearn either needs to stack the undercard, which he hasn't been doing so far this year, or put it on regular Sky. It's not a bad defence though, Pulev is #6 with TBRB and #4 with The Ring

The Sky Box Office undercards have been ****e this year. This show needs to be more like the Joshua vs Molina card and less like the more recent ones

Yep, it will be Pulev. Good fight although AJ will work him over and KO him.

That sets up Wilder for next year if he has the balls...and actually decides to fight again.
