This is strange, I was thinking maybe Goldenboy have a proper reason not to fight in the UK : like issues with visas for the undercard but then I checked boxrec and nothing has been scheduled as chief support...

HBO gave them the date before the opponent was mandated by the WBA. They negotiated with Salido for this date and other NON UK opponents. Then WBA enforced this guy but they already had a US date and venue lined up. HBO wants a primetime card on this date because they are going to pair it with the rebroadcast of Canelo/GGG the week after the fight. No way would they let Golden Boy change this to a UK fight meaning it airs early in the day on HBO.

Think Golden Boy ran out of options, HBO gave them the date for Linares. Hearn said the original choice was Argenis Mendez, then they tried to get Salido. Everyone else had fights lined up. The Campbell fight was supposed to be happening in the UK at the end of the year.

Exactly. This fight wasn't supposed to happen WBA last minute forced their hand and Golden Boy already had the HBO date and venue and other opponents they were looking at. Only thing good is this gets the mandatory out the way and it makes sense to have Linares fight in the US where he hasn't fought since 2014 to get him reacquainted with US fans especially if he fights Mikey Garcia after.
