I would love to see this happen. Ortiz really deserves this shot. I think he would eat Wilder.

Exactly the reason you pointed out - it's a while before he gets a shot against Joshua, to me that makes it all the more sensible for Ortiz to take a shot now. He can't wait around forever, and if any heavyweight in the game right now has to have urgency and speed up the timeline to a bit fight, it's him - father time will cripple him faster than anyone.

Ortiz isn't in a position to be patient. He needs a big fight now. Plus, by the time he does get a go at Joshua (12-18 months away), Joshua is going to be a better fighter than he is today. Joshua is most likely better than Wilder right now - he'll be two steps ahead in a year and a half. Joshua will be improved, Ortiz will be older and probably worse.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush as they say.
Very true, guess it's more a case of whether Ortiz wants to make money or be a world champion. From a money standpoint waiting on Joshua is the logical decision but from a competitive standpoint he's definitely got a better chance of being a world champion in facing Wilder this year than waiting another year for Joshua as you've said.

Sadly, if he loses this fight, his career will never bounce back

Absolutely. If there is any way possible Ortiz-Wilder could go ahead, we'll find out pretty quickly what Ortiz's intentions are, and what level of self belief he has.

              Joshua
I'm actually not too confident in the above and would probably favor Joshua over either Wilder or Ortiz, but in some ways I think Wilder could present some difficult looks for Ortiz.

Heavyweight is full of good fights, and there are plenty of matches in which the underdog is very live.

I really would like this fight to get made.

Wilder needs a win like Ortiz to legitimise his world title reign (feel free to come at me fanboys; but it's true and you know it). Moreover a win for Wilder against a top 5 heavy in Ortiz is also a big statement to Joshua and would increase the clamour for a Joshua v Wilder fight tenfold, would also most likely allow Wilder a bigger slice of the pie too. Granted beating Ortiz may not increase Wilder's standing in the UK casual market, especially when you consider all they've really seen of Ortiz is the 2 fights when Hearn was co-promoting him where he looked pretty average.

For Ortiz on the other hand other than meaning he gets a title shot now rather than later i'm really not seeing the upsides? The likelihood is that he's still got to wait the best part of a year to get Joshua in the ring (with Klitschko and IBF mandatory Pulev being before him) but surely this fight is one hell of a risk to losing that fight... a fight which undoubtedly will bring in the most money Ortiz could possibly make in a single event.

Granted I say all this but for us boxing fans it's a great fight that everyone would want.
Seems boxers often opt for a quicker path to a title.

Plus, on the having to be in waiting--sort of the point of winning a title is that you get to defend it (and headline events, taking the majority purse).

I can definitely see the risk question though, for both fighters.

Wilders ppl shoulda had him fighting minimum of 4 x a yr. That woulda really helped him improve ovverall game imo. But its 2x a yr and he has lots to work on. I think he was handled improperly for a powerful entertaining fighter he is
