What if boxing was set up similar to tennis in that all the four major sanctioning bodies (WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO) gave their belt to the fighter that wins the tournament every year. The defending champ would fight through the tournament just like the contender would. Naturally, an incentive of some kind would have to be given to the Champ for winning it the previous year. Perhaps an easier route to the finals the following year, but in the finals have him face the best of the opposing side of the tournament bracket. The sanctioning bodies would chose in what country they decide to host the tournament and they could just travel from city to city in that country during the tournament to make the sure the money kept coming in. Giving it worldwide exposure would increase the competition pool and popularize the sport. Fighters would have wins and losses, but the accomplishment would be the championships gained year in and year out in the four major tournaments. Become Undisputed and it would be compatible to a Grand Slam. Each weight class has its own tournament, but some weight classes would have to be eliminated.
A Fighter's career stats would like this:
WBA Middleweight Champion '18, '19, '20
WBO Middleweight Champion '18, '19
Added awards for the most exceptional fighter at any weight class (P4P King) would be added.
As well as awards for what fighters performed through the duration of an entire calendar year in the tournaments.
The four major tournaments would not be the only tournaments. There would be others just as there are other minor titles. If anyone wanted to enter the game as a promoter, They would have to prove that they were in it for the long run through building the prestige of their title. So yes, there would be room for a PBC Tournament or a TR Tournament. I'm sure having the Championship of one of those tournaments on a fighter's resume would probably be equal to a Major, but not the same historically.
What do you think?
