Comments Thread For: Chocolatito Makes Trainer Change, Ex-Coach Speaks Out

Wilmer Hernandez, the former trainer of Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez, has broken his silence with respect to the recent new that he was replaced by the boxer who he considered to be a close friend. After the death of Chocolatito's longtime trainer Arnulfo Obando, it was determined that Wilmer would be called upon to take his place prior to the fight against Srisaket Sor Rugvisai in March.

Not so much That, im sure they will still have a friendship outside of the sport. This is just business doesn't seem or sound personal at this point. But you are spot on in the sense that he should know friendship and business don't mix and should not have thought their friendships/relationships would make him irreplaceable.

Business is business, if they feel a change is required then the business side of things would take over the friendship side of things.

Wilmer must understand 'Chocolatito' arguably has the toughest road ahead of him among the elite boxers in the sport , Gonzalez stands against the order of young primed, highly skilled contenders and champions @ jr. bantamweight : Inoue, Cuadras, Estrada, Yafai, Rungivsai, Ancajas which have all types of physical advantages over him including youth ; to make matters more difficult these matches come before the great 'Chocolatito' at the later stage of his career.

therefore going back to his roots to the Teiken Gym in Japan, trusting in coach Sendai Tanaka and that was in his corner when he won his first world title in 2008 is a wise decision given the wars that are in front of him.

If Hernandez was a true friend he would wish Gonzalez well even if it meant that he would not be accompanying him to the top of the mountain once more.

I wonder if this happens if Choclatito gets the decision? Unless the trainer had no real strategy and was unable to convey his message properly in between rounds, then I am not sure I understand why he would get fired for such a close fight?
