Because it was in close proximity, and there was no room for panic wrestling, or grappling. He knew Kovalev could've landed a 2 piece on him at that instant, and didn't want to get KTFO. People gotta realize, it's not always grappling and grabbing in all street fight scenarios. Sometimes the grappler has the advantage, and sometimes the striker has the advantage, and in that instance, Conor didn't want any parts of an elite boxer that could've literally had his head swiveling off his neck.
