Comments Thread For: Ruben Guerrero: My Son No Underdog, Steppingstone vs. Figueroa

NEW YORK Ruben Guerrero has heard and read an enormous amount of criticism aimed at his son recently. Robert Guerrero has been labeled a "gatekeeper" and a "steppingstone" leading up to his fight Saturday night against Omar Figueroa (FOX; 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT). The younger, undefeated Figueroa is more than a 2-1 favorite over Robert Guerrero, even though Figueroa hasn't fought in 19 months.

Despite The Ghost losing 4 of his last 6 (& arguably deserving to lose 5 of his last 6) I feel like he fights to the level of his competition most of the time, which can be good or bad when you got Floyd, Keith & Danny on your record but also Aaron Martinez + David Peralta lol, & he's a live dog here. I think Figueroa is a big question mark with only 1 fight in 2 years & they have styles that will make this a fight where Guerrero will likely have moments. What Guerrero can or can't make of those moments & where Figueroa actual is at in his career will decide this fight.

Think Figueroa is the more skilled guy who should win here if he's 70% of what he's been in the past, but I won't be shocked with a Guerrero upset in this one.

I'll always root for the Ghost cos he was the first big name to give Keith a shot, so I'm hoping he pulls off the upset tonight and I think he will. His decline is very apparent but I think he's still got enough to get a decision tonight. Gonna be an action packed fight.

And that would matter a whole lot more if we knew what version of Figueroa existed today. Don't discount that angle of this fight. And thats why I'm saying I expect Figueroa to come out on top, but anyone thinking Guerrero doesn't have a decent shot to upset here isn't looking at the overall landscape of this fight & the fighters.

If Figueroa from 2 years ago shows up, slightly heavier of course, he'll make it look easy & my posts in this thread will look dumb & damn near Guerrero fanboy-ish doe so theres that too lol.

Yep. Whatever happens with who wins happens, but I think this will be a fun fight regardless.

I'm a fan of Omar, but i'm not sure that 147 is where he needs to be! I thought he should be @ 140. He says he intends to go to 140, but why isn't he there now? Is it that he can't make it? I believe that his last fight with Antonio DeMarco was @ 147 too. Omar might be like Guererro (and Broner), a great fighter who outgrew his weight-class. We'll see tonight!

Nah I don't think so. Can't be wrong and look smart at the same time, just wrong and just be plain wrong.

Ghost is completely shot at this stage, it's unbelievable that he is headlining a primetime FOX card.
