Wow, May vs. Mac completely overshadowed GGG vs Canelo...

GGG vs Canelo has about as much hype as Kov vs Ward and thats pretty sad considering both fights were the best boxing can produce. Thoughts?

i was playing videogames with some dudes yesterday who were like "i want to see those two guys fight" [talking about mayweather - mcgregor.] they didn't even know their names, but they were interested in the fight. "i hope he gets knocked out with one punch." [again, not even knowing the names of the guys they were talking about.]

so there's your answer. it's not a surprise at all that this side show is going to sell. mayweather - pacquiao was a side show by the time it took place, and it completely destroyed the pay per view buy and revvie records. casuals are the people who drive ppv sales into the millions, not hardcore boxing fans. ****, how much you want to bet that half of the guys on this forum don't even buy ppvs or hbo and showtime subs? and how many people even use boxingscene regularly? 25,000? 50,000? 10,000? i mean ****, there are only 200k people registered.

casuals drive ppv sales. why was chavez / canelo a big fight? becuase somebody marketed chavez, a quitter and a momma's boy, as the "more mexican" of the two a rivalry caught on with mexican casuals. anybody who has actually watched boxing in the last five years could tell you that chavez would be a walking corpse at 165 lbs, and that he was a chump to begin with.

canelo - golovkin is not only a matchup between marquee guys, it's a really exciting fight on paper. canelo is going to do a hell of a lot better than most people are anticipating. that kid can fight. he's not going to go quietly into the night even in the event that he is outgunned. if boxing existed in a perfect world it would smash mayweather - mcgregor in ppv buys and in hype. but we live in a world that let manny and floyd push off their fight for 5-7 years until both had wasted their primes getting inflated purses against nobodies and washed up fighters. 90% of the people who bought that fight didn't even understand that they'd been duped, they just thought boxing sucks without understanding that the fight didn't deliver because it was 5-7 years too late.

May/Mac was always going to be hyped because it's a freakshow. After it's over, Canelo vs GGG has 3 weeks to build, which is really the most critical time to build a fight, in the last 3 weeks. I think the sentiment that May/Mac is going to somehow kill it is misconceived. It's like saying a steakhouse will go out of business because an ice cream shop just opened up next door.

You have 2 limited english speakers and boring personalities.

Then you have Mcgregor who is a great **** talker and Mayweather who isn't as good but can hold his own. McGregor is even using that "I am boxing" that Golden Boy is trying to use. Do a google search for "I am boxing" and Mcgregor pops up, not the Golden Boy movie by the same name.

Yes, Canelo-GGG is an afterthought for the casuals at the moment, but people still know about it. When someone brings up May-McG, I immediately ask them about Canelo-GGG, and they know about the fight and show interest in watching it.

Wait until May-McG is over, it will be 1 - 1.5 week of ****ting on the fight, and then everyone's attention will turn to Canelo-GGG for the following 2.5 - 3 weeks, with the hype increasing every week. GBP will use the potential Floyd-McGregor borefest to hype up the "real fight" Canelo-GGG, which will be "action-packed" and it's what "real boxing fans" want to see.

Put it like this: Whoever is going to buy Canelo-GGG, is still going to buy Canelo-GGG. Mexican fans, and other Americans and Latinos.
