It is illegal but many boxers do it and many referees don't enforce the no backhand rule.

I haven't seen the actual punches Wlad threw so I don't no if they were illegal or not. A back hand punch is illegal. If he threw a back hand blow then it isn't legal. I don't consider Wlad a dirty fighter but he holds too much in my opinion. A good referee should not let Wlad hold to excess or throw backhand blows. I don't mean this to be an attack on Wlad and I think he was a very good heavyweight champ for many years.
