1991 - A Masterpiece Signed by James Toney: Part I

I was never a big fan of Elvis Presley - he was always a little too forced for my taste – but my uncle was an Elvis fanatic. Oftentimes he’d sit me down for an Elvis retrospective, from the young svelte rock and roller to the much-maligned “Vegas” incarnation of The King – a fat parody trying to replicate his best years for a still adoring audience. It was the perceived genius, not the tight, black jeans that the fanatics trooped out to see. [details]

    great article.

its amazing how many people insist that james toney was completely outboxed for 10 & 1/2 rounds until he landed 1 lucky homerun punch...when in reality that wasn't the situation at all.

its also amazing that i've heard that james was on "spaghetti legs" against merqui sosa when thats a giant lie too.

toney is/was a beast and is an all-time great.

Cheers Gringo and Beezy, I enjoyed writing the article as it is the first one I've written about James, look out for the second part and further Toney articles, including "James Toney vs Eddie Futch." If it passes muster of course!

Toney, for my money, out-boxed Nunn in terms of the fight as a whole.

Great article. The fantasy of Toney landing a lucky punch in Round 11 needs to exposed with articles like this. Around round 8 of that fight you could clearly see the tides turning -- and like the author pointed out, Nunn NEVER hurt Toney.

One thing people don't understand is how frickin' hard Sosa hit. He was a caveman with massive power. Toney's mom was ringside and she told me that out of all his fights, that was the only one where she could actually see Toney wincing from the shots, and that the solid connects sounding like a baseball bat hitting a side of beef.
Toney broke Nunn down. Nunn was soooo ****y and thought he could clown with Toney and beat him on the inside. And when he realized he was in trouble, it was much too late - his legs were gone from the body work Toney had consistently laid on him.

You really nailed the Nunn fight. Beyond the showboating, Nunn was extremely gifted. Unfortunately, he thought he was invincible and he wasn't quite Muhammad Ali. As you note, Toney really invested in body work in the early rounds in textbook manner. Dundee had been telling Nunn to box and move from the first round but by the time that ****y MF started listening, his body could no longer perform - Toney had drained it.
