Comments Thread For: Lemieux Admits He Passed on Saunders, Has Eyes Set on Cotto

Former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (38-3, 33 KOs) can finally return to the gym. He got the green light from his doctors to resume training. He was taking time off to fully heal a tear in one shoulder and a left hand injury that was sustained in his last fight, a ten round unanimous decision over Marcos Reyes, which took place in May as part of the Canelo Alvarez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. undercard at T-Mobile Arena in London.

Couldn't he have fought Saunders in late August and Cotto in January or something? Or I guess because Kamegei is so overmatched against Cotto, the plan is for Cotto to come back in late December and that's when it will happen?

Idk. Seems like the schedules were such that he should have been able to face Saunders in late August or early September, and Cotto 4 to 5 months later. Too bad. Now he better hope Cotto doesn't do to him what he did to GGG and use the possibility of fighting him next to sell a mismatch first, only to duck him afterwards.

An Olde Boxing axiom says to never pass up a title shot, hopefully Lemieux's gamble pays off.

Well Lemieux, if you really want to fight Cotto be prepared to fight at a catchweight because Cotto ain't fighting you at 160.

And I know David struggles already to get to 160. But Cotto will not fight Lemieux at 160.

Does Lemieux think he can even make a weight that Cotto will agree to?

Lemieux is a joke. He should have taken the fight with Saunders. It was a winnable fight that would have set him up as a legit opponent for the GGG/Canelo winner. Its so frustrating that we'll have to settle for Lemiuex fighting another Reyes level opponent if we get to see him fight at all just because he's trying to keep a loss from costing him a shot at Cotto.
