I am a Calzaghe fan but admit I haven't seen many of his fights because of his overseas location. For those guys who have watched his career unfold, do you think he has lost anything or is he as good as ever? I saw the Lacy fight and was really impressed. He displayed some good skills. I was just wondering if he has hit his peak or is a bit past it. And where do you rank him among the top Super middles, or even middles of all time? He isn't getting younger, what is he gonna have to do to cement a place among the great middleweights, or a place in the HOF?
Is Calzaghe a bit past his prime?

He went through many personal problems after the Mitchell fight and looked to be fading bigtime, infact he looked God-damn awful against Salem (his head was all over the place). Thankfully, he pulled himself together for the Veit fight in Germany and looked pretty good again. Honestly, he'll break his hand on Glen Johnson's head. That's his downfall. He broke his hand in sparring just before the Robin Reid fight and it caused him to put in poor performances against Reid, Thornberry and Starie - he finally went to get treatment on his hand after being booed out of the building against Starie (he had to keep fighting with the fractured hand because he had no money) and finally found some form again against Sheika, Woodhall and Veit with his hand feeling fine. He went through a tough 12 rounds with Brewer on Showtime, looking excellent in the process - which finally earned him respect on the other side of the Atlantic for his talent. He said he was "definately" moving up to LHW after the Mitchell fight if Hopkins wouldn't fight him, but still hasn't done so.
I don't think he can get into the HOF, it's called the Hall of FAME and nobody knows who Calzaghe is outside of Wales.Last edited by JuicyJuice; 05-30-2006, 11:38 AM. -

I was going to say the same.People can say what they want about lacy or this and that but Calzaghe clearly is IN his prime right now.He may not be as fast as he once was but he is smarter and knows how to use his skills to the fullest of his ability right now.Originally posted by PBF34i have seen no evidence that he is past his prime, e****ially with his last preformance.Comment

Yeah, the 1996 Calzaghe was AWESOME the way he would blow people away..ripping right through them with wild power and talent. But he's much smarter now, and a better all-rounder.Originally posted by raesaadI was going to say the same.People can say what they want about lacy or this and that but Calzaghe clearly is IN his prime right now.He may not be as fast as he once was but he is smarter and knows how to use his skills to the fullest of his ability right now.Comment

I dunno if he his past his prime, JC has not been in many tough fights apart from Reid and few scary moments against Eubank, he has owned everyone else. But yeah dude is still sick, his only weakness is his hands, I agree with JJ, Calzaghe will break his hand on Johnson's head, thats his only problem its the sole reason Calzaghe couldn't stop Lacy in that fight, his left hand was redundant for about 3 rounds.Comment
