Why do I get the strange feeling you are a fan of McGuigan?Originally posted by JerryJigsaw
One of my favorite boxing moments was when they announced McGuigan beat Pedroza and they hoisted him in the air. That was incredible to watch one man revel in the success of what he fought his heart off for, dethroning a long reigning champion in the process.

strangely there aren't many boxers from Ireland. If you ask me it's the amount of beer consumed, people would just rather get drunk than box!Comment

Now they got John Duddy, and during the 90s Wayne McCullough was pretty good. But Ireland has never exactly been a hotbed of boxing activity, just Soccer and hiding pots of gold I think.Originally posted by JerryJigsawstrangely there aren't many boxers from Ireland. No, the chinese and japanese are not genetically inferior.
Japanese are quite active in the lower lower weights. Koki Kameda is a good japanese prospect. Also, there is the fact that the east have their own combat sports/martial arts.
If someone asked what's the fighting style of the US, UK, and most of the west, most people would say boxing. Obviously generalising, but US, it definitely is. Japanese? Karate straight away. All the kids who might have made brilliant boxers learn karate instead, except for those minor few - and those make up the japanese segment in boxing.
In China, up until quite recently, boxing was outlawed. And the same applies - Chinese kids learn various forms of Kung Fu. It's their national fighting style, sorta. That's why there are fewer boxers.
However, the way China develops it's athletes is very effective. in 2008 olympics, i think china might get some boxing medals in the lower weights. Expect the number to grow every olympics.Comment
