Is Roy Jones in his prime the best fighter of all time?

He's got to be up there.
I'd say Robbo, because he was pretty much perfect in every department. But in his prime, Roy would have been one of the hardest guys to have beaten.
Who would you have favoured to have beaten Roy at 25? That's not to say he couldn't have been beaten, but who would you actually have put a substantial amount of money on to have beaten him?
There's:
LaMotta
Robinson
McCallum
Nunn
Hagler
Hearns
Benn
Liles
Charles
Foster
Spinks
Moore
Moorer
Although I could envisage a scenario where Roy could have lost to some of them, I couldn't honestly have favoured any of them over him.Last edited by robertzimmerman; 07-01-2017, 03:57 PM.Comment

GG has just struggled with Jacobs and is easy to tag.

No. I was and still am a huge Roy fan. He was fun to watch and I think he's one of those guys that most boxing historians underrate, but at the same time I have to admit he doesn't have the deepest resume of quality wins. Also he ducked a lot of quality opponents at SMWComment

Shut up you fool.
Your hero Joe couldn't lace Roy's gloves at SMW.
He had to wait until he was a shell before he phoned him up and offered him a fight.
Read carefully:
Any SMW who struggled with Robin Reid, and who was dropped by Kabary Salem and Byron Mitchell, WAS NEVER GOOD ENOUGH TO HAVE BEATEN ROY JONES AT 25/26.Comment

yeah joe was never good enough. thats all we heard all his career. he was never good enough. yet everyone you put in front of him he beat. joe could get dropped, but he would get back up and win. fact is i never saw joe getting knocked out cold against a fighter like tarverroy wasnt even that old at that point lol, people just started to figure him out and his glass chin got cracked.
Haha!
What, after he'd fought 50 fights, across 5 weight classes, after 15 years?
Yeah.
You never saw Joe knocked out, because he didn't fight the same number of fights, against the same calibre of fighters, in the same weight divisions, Einstein.
Jeez, if Roy had spent his entire career at SMW, he'd have defended his IBF belt 30 odd times, without a blip on his resume.
No, you never saw Joe get knocked out by Tarver. And you never would have done. Because he wouldn't fight Tarver. He wouldn't fight Roy or anybody at LHW in the late 90's-early 00's, because he preferred to starve himself to fight the likes of Mario Veit at SMW instead. And when he did move up to LHW, he wouldn't fight Dawson, saying he'd done nothing, even though he'd beaten Adamek, Tarver and Johnson etc, preferring to instead fight a guy who 12 months earlier, he'd labelled as being washed up since 2004.
One day you'll realise that if Joe had taken the path that guys like Roy walked, he would never have retired undefeated.
At 34, Roy fought a top 10 HW, before dropping back to fight Tarver at LHW. And LHW was Roy's THIRD weight class. Whereas Joe walked around at 190, but wouldn't fight at LHW until 2008.
When Joe was 34, he fought Peter Manfredo and Sakio Bika, 2 TV fighters from the "Contender"
When Roy was making history, Joe was defending his WBO belt against Tocker Pudwell.
If Roy had fought those same fights that Joe did in the same order, he'd have retired undefeated.
If Joe had fought Roy's opponents in the same order, the likelihood is that he wouldn't have done.
You've got a lot to learn about this game.Last edited by robertzimmerman; 07-01-2017, 04:31 PM.Comment
