                Threw less than normal, took some mean power shots, was in a fight with like 4 or 5 swing rounds...

                  Well Jacobs was considered as the legitimate #2 MW for that fight, so the #1 vs the #2 guy it's bound to be close. Jacobs had good footwork and a good defence, as well is size, weight and reach advantages, so yes Golovkin did indeed look not as good as he usually does, but he was still the aggressor for the whole fight.
