  • Comments Thread For: Beibut Shumenov Officially Retires Due To Severe Eye Injury

Two-division World Boxing Association (WBA) World Champion Beibut Shumenov has relinquished his WBA cruiserweight world title, due to his career-ending eye injury, and he has announced his retirement from the ring. "I have regrettably relinquished my WBA cruiserweight title and retired from boxing because of a traumatic eye injury suffered the week before my last scheduled fight," Shumenov said from his Las Vegas home. "I'm extremely disappointed my boxing career has ended like this but, unfortunately, injuries are part of this sport and there's nothing I can do about it. I still have blurred vision and I need to have an additional surgery next month to try to further repair so I don't risk blindness in my (right) eye.

he had a decent career. maybe could have been more if he hadn't trained himself, especially vs a guy like B-Hop.

Too bad, he wasn't anything special but he was a solid fighter. Good luck in retirement

          Unfortunate ending to his career.

Watching him work his own corner during a fight was bizarre.

I know a lot of people wanted him gone so there you go. He's gone now.

Nothing personal against the dude but he won his title off Campillo on a robbery and then lost his gloves for about 2 years. When he did finally find 'em he had pants pulled down by a greybeard (no disrespect to BHops). I'm always divided on Beibut whether to admire him for sticking with this **** when he honestly didn't need to for the money or to dump on him for the privileges that wealth (supposedly) bought him - like a place on the national team.

Nah. Fuck it. Props to the dude. He wasn't really anything special (as a boxer) but he did choose to fight when he coulda just sat on his ass and enjoyed his money.

Hopefully his eye heals and he can enjoy retirement.
