    The long count

For the first time I have seen the Tunney/Dempsey long count fight.

The referee did the proper thing. When the fighter goes down you call down and would normally start the count. However, with Dempsey standing right there, not the furthest neutral corner, the referee did not and should not have started the count until Dempsey went to a neutral corner. The long count was long, but it was done in the proper fashion by the referee. If Dempsey, who wanted the neutral corner rule, would have gone directly to a neutral corner then the count would not have been so long. It was Dempseys own fault.

The rule was brought in right before the bout. A fighter scoring a knockdown must go to the furthest neutral corner before the count shall begin. Yes it was in effect. Dempsey actually requested that the bout be fought with that rule from what they said.

I agree. There seems to be enduring opinion that Dempsey was robbed, but the referee was just following the rules. Dempsey scored the knockdown, then went to the corner behind him probably out of instinct because he was notorious for hitting his man when he was trying to get up. Tunney does deserve props for being smart enough to milk the count and get on his bicycle when he got up. He recovered well and went on to drop Dempsey and win the decision. Great fight.

** The ref may have done the proper thing, but I don't believe for a moment that Jack requested the rule. It was inserted by someone else.

Moreover, the ref didn't provide Jack with the same courtesy when he went down. Tunney was hanging around, remember he was not used to the new rule, and the ref was obviously giving Jack a quick count to boot. Tunney got a gift with that rule and Dempsey just added on to his legend.

if i remeber correctly it was tunnet thatwanted the neutral corner rule, dempsey stod there to finish him off.

anyway if the judge did whathe was supposed to do, than why did he start the count immediatly whan tunney kd dempsey? tunney wasnt in a neutral corner

Good post, thats why there are skeptics about the fight. I hate bringing up conspiracy theories questioning the legitimacy of the fight game, but you have a point.
