People mentioning Floyd didn't care about belts, that is somewhat true but the difference is he didn't care to keep them after winning them. He didn't care about the WBO belt he won of Manny and let them Top Rank boys fight for it. He beat Mosely for the WBA belt and didn't keep it. As for Canelo, he was happy to pay the WBC sanctioning fees to fight for it and defend it against Khan. He only had a problem when the WBC enforced his mandatory, something they were well aware of before facing Cotto. If Canelo wins, will he drop the IBF belt if he is forced a mandatory against a Charlo or Jacobs?

Mayweather flat out refused the WBA belt before the fight. The belt wasn't on the line.

As long as the WBC belt doesn't become important to him later on he has no issue.

Most people wouldn't even care about this so not like it matters much but for example say Canelo wins hangs out at 160 does some work ignoring the WBC but then moves up to 168. Of the 4 title holders the WBC guy happens to be the weakest, if he starts going for that WBC belt his stance becomes an issue because that belt means nothing to him clearly so he would be going after the easiest mark. Fair enough as a first target but there becomes no other way to explain it off other than he took on the softest champ.


Honestly that is only a minor issue and only something people would bring up to hate on Canelo but it is a line of attack that does hold water in that scenario.

The WBC actually needs him and the cut they'd get from a Canelo check, Canelo doesn't need them. Also, there's nothing Canelo will get from them when he retires, like a pension plan or something like that, a monthly check if he's broke or something, literally nothing.

In a boxing world with 4 major titles, the sanctioning bodies shouldn't act up against the superstars of the sport, because they are pretty much expendable. Ring, IBF, WBA, WBO are fine, they're still recognizable world major titles and historical titles.
