  • Comments Thread For: Ward vs. Kovalev: Two Fights, Two Unique Outcomes

LAS VEGAS - Anyone who predicted there would be a knockout in the rematch between Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev were correct. Few were correct in predicting it would be Ward, even if you count Ward's immediate family and managerial team. With the way the first fight played out on Nov. 19, which Andre Ward won despite an overwhelming amount of media and fight fans who scored the fight for Kovalev, the thought was Kovalev had to score a knockout Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

Try to imagine any other sport where the contest ends on a foul.
It doesn't matter what happened before the foul or if the foul was in retaliation for something the opponent did.
A wrong call is just a bad way to end a championship fight.

Fight didn't end on a foul. The fight ended on and legal body shot, that doubled Kovalev over. Kovalev staying doubled over was an illegal defensive position. By him remaining in an illegal defensive position, he no longer gets the protection of the rulebook. Ward was allowed to throw to the body. Not his fault Kovalev illegally covered his beltline.

Having a fight stopped after the most obvious low blow in the history of boxing - is another Black eye for boxing.

Imagine the ref waving off the Floyd fight against Judah after the low blow and giving Judah a TKO?

He is so consumed with racism that he's become delusional... I actually believe in his mind that he saw a shot to the ball sack being a shot right to the abs. There are people like this who can recreate history in their own minds.

The fight didn't end on a foul and the ref didn't even call one. The fight ended because a badly hurt fighter stopped defending himself and left the ref no other choice but to save him from further damage.

last 3 punches were clearly low. i see the ward fanboys are simply going to pretend they werent. very sad.

if you slow the punches you can see the first hits him right around the letters on kovalevs trunks and slightly higher-clearly low

second punch actually hits his left leg first and then goes up into his stomach-leg is clearly low or are you denying that?

third punch hits him square in the letters-clearly low

these werent even the "belt line" punches that ward landed earlier. these were well below.

he stopped defending himself and doubled over because he was hit with illegal punches. same thing happened in judah-mayweather but they didnt stop the fight and give judah a tko win. you would have been outraged and rightfully so. a lot of times people hit the canvas from being low blowed are those now going to be ko wins if you are a fan of the fighter throwing the low blows? are you going to use the well he would have won anyway argument? it was a terrible call full of a fight with terrible reffing. unfortunately another ward fight goes down in the books as a foul filled controversy that favored the entitled hometown guy

First, I didn't say there wasn't a low punch. I said that wasn't what ended the fight.

Remember when Zab Judah fell to the ground after what he thought was low blow from Khan. The ref didn't call it and counted him out. It took a few replays to see that punch was borderline. The ref doesn't have instant replay to go by in the middle of a fight. Kovalev tried the same tactic before with what he probably thought was a low blow and the ref told him to keep fighting, why would he think the ref would do something different at the end of the fight?
