You've got a good point. Taken alone, if you only watched the 20 seconds leading up to the stoppage you would think it was a terrible stoppage. But the ref had a fighter who had turned his back and walked away during the fight multiple times. He had stopped fighting already multiple times in just the last round and a half. Those are signs refs pay attention to, they mean that a guy wants out of the fight.
So Kovalev had basically shown the ref he didn't want to fight anymore several times. And now he's hunched over and not defending himself at all and taking big shots. And this was after he had been nearly decapitated less than a minute earlier by that right.
Personally, I would have liked to see it continue, but that was far from a bad stoppage.
