  • Comments Thread For: Trainer Discusses Devon Alexander's Personal Demons, Comeback

In this two part Q&A, world class trainer Kevin Cunningham opens up on the personal demons that his fighter, three-time champion Devon Alexander (26-4), went through and how he is close to returning to the ring after kicking a two and a half year prescription drug addiction that began after his dominant victory over former champion Marcos Maidana.

Devon cannot punch hard and that makes Devon a fringe talent

Devon couldn't crack an egg with those feather touches and taps that touch opponents. The grunting is also ****** but feather taps do not win big fights. Put Devon in with Guerrero or berto and let it fly. Devon is average.

No one knew light tapping Devon was even gone from boxing

Devon was not missed from boxing at all as the feather touching tapping girly kid was a fringe contender anyway who lost all his most important fights. maidana got robbed anyway a real hose job.

He needs to develop a new way of attacking! I say develop Joe Calazaghe's style just overwhelm opponents with volume!

He has the hand speed to do it and the chin to take counter punches when someone times him!

His stamina was never questioned but his power and style has been!

He's good at timing slow fighters and waiting for a counter but can't do that against the likes of today's welterweights if you don't have the power!

If only his coach had the sense to see that Devon has no power at welter and that he needs to change his style, right around the Khan fight I'd say!

Fuck reflexes, the guy isn't a good mover so he can't just counter punch like he use to anymore!

He needs to up his cardio and just start throwing 100 punches a round cuz everyone at welter would beat him easily!

Garcia, Peterson, Thurman, Spence, Porter again, heck even a shopworn Brook would!

His best bet to get a title is a way past prime Pacquiao and I doubt he could beat even that version of Pacquiao!

He might as well move back down to 140 and hope Crawford moves up sooner than later!

He was a good fighter in his time but the coach should've made major changes when Devon couldn't KO Khan!

I loved Maidana... but robbed isn't correct the fight was one sided. it was just a piss poor performance by maidana and the ref who let fight be on giant hug.

I agree that Devon does not have power to fend off the welterweights we have right now. He should work on his style and come back with a solution to his lack of punching power otherwise he will just get concussion after concussion and become a punching bag for the division.

Drug addiction can be a motherf'er.
Whether the drugs are illegal or prescription.

I've seen it ruin many once promising lives.
