Why do many people have a negative outlook on Boxing?

Most people I've conversated with at work or just casual social talking at gatherings tend to dislike boxing.

Sure it's a violent sport but there's an art to it - I myself used to box so I understand the nature of it and love it very much. It's also an excellent work out on cardio, one of the best cardio work outs out there, yet people still judge and look narrowly onto it without any form of understanding.

I find it hard to explain and I never tend bother to try to get them to understand it because they judge negatively about it. There was only one colleague I worked with that followed the sport and we always talked about boxing.

I guess there's a quote that goes saying, "People judge what they can't understand."

boxing is no longer a mainstream sport so people don't care about it or they look down on it.

Its two guys hitting each other in the head ideally til one is on the ground unable to function for seconds to a minute or two. If the ref shouted "Wooooooooooooorld Staaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrr" before he started the ten count it would be no surprise to most casual sports fans & non-sports fans. This isn't a sport for everyone.

Yeah, that is understandable. Very true, thanks.

Because of the nature of the sport. Two people that punchh each other in the face, that's not a sport for everyone. Many people think it's primitive and don't belong in a modern society...etc.

Boxing has always had it's detractors. Those who think it is merely a contest between two Neanderthals. With little to no knowledge or thought as to the discipline, training, skill and heart it takes to compete inside the ring. It is the ultimate test of determination, will, and one man establishing his dominance over the other. Of course, there are many fights that end up falling short of expectations, end in a robbery, or are left to marinate way too long, which puts a bad taste in the mouth of not just casuals but hardcore fans as well.

As we move further into this kindler, gentler, easily offended world we live in, boxing's popularity will only wane over the next few decades until it becomes a fringe sport that is reduced to local venues and secret clubs.

Corruption too. Lots of people have been turned off boxing because of that.

I've said the following so many times on here y'all probably think I hate boxing but I'm a big boxing fan and I go to boxing gyms hence why i post here

But boxing is a pretty simple sport like golf. I always compare it to golf. It's a basic sport, potentially boring as heck and that's why many people are not interested and just dip in for the final 6 holes of the masters (equivalent to a casual just watching manny v pac and then aj v k and that's it for 2 years

But everytime they watch they leave with all these opinions about the game and who's decent. Cos it's so easy to understand, after those 6 holes they think they seen it all

That makes golf fans annoyed and insecure about their sport. Same in boxing. I never hear football or basketball fans call someone a casual. It's a boxing thing (and golf fans sort of do too)

And they try to fend these people off by over complicating and mystifying the sport to try and make it out to be something more than it is.

This makes boxing fans annoying and puts people off the sport. So job done I guess?
