We have witnessed how Japan owned the 108-pound category after challenger Ken Shiro unseated Mexican Ganigan Lopez for the WBC title on Saturday, May 20. On Sunday, Milan Melindo shockingly stopped former three division king Akira Yaegashi in the first round to get the IBF strap. With the win, the Filipino Melindo also punctuated an end to a short-lived, all-inclusive Japanese domination at 108 pounds.

Um, not sure the author understands the meaning of "universally recognized." He's #5 on boxrec and Tanaka has a better claim to being #1.

Well, I think you should abandon the routine to check BoxRec because of their ratings. It is a mess. BoxRec is useful and can't-miss because of their unbelievable database.

You should check The Ring ratings to get a normal view of who is who in a division. And Pedro Guevara is #1 there for a reason.

Tanaka has a bright future at 108 pounds if he stays consistent and focused. He is talented and has already secured two really good wins at light flyweight but he needs to stay sharp and face the best available opponents to reach the top in the division in my opinion.
