I've struggled to answer this question. I think it's a case of Ward exceeding expectations. Early in the fight, he was rocked hard by a freaking jab. Then he went down.

The judges probably thought they knew what was coming, a nasty KO. But instead, Ward wrestled and clinched his way to a bunch of close-ish rounds. Suddenly he's an American hero with a comeback story against the ******, evil, racist ****** Russian.

They gave Ward every possible benefit of the doubt because he SHOULD have been stopped, in their minds.

That's the only way I can explain it. They voted with their hearts, not their heads.
