This backfired when the French trained the ex-****** who would later come back to lead other former ****** in a war of independence.
It was also only possible because France was overextended in wars on multiple fronts and was 4000+ miles away in a time of slow travel.
There are countless examples of ****** who were taken in battle and freed by fighting their captors, often with the help of other non-slave countrymen. Much of what is now Europe involved this with tribes taking other tribes as ****** until the captors were beaten back and the former ****** were freed. The Barbary Coast ******s did this for centuries to Europeans, etc. I'm sure the same thing happened in sub-Saharan Africa among their tribes, although they didn't have any developed culture to record much for posterity.
