The problem as I see it is not the quitting itself,is the way he quit.He wasnt getting hit when he took a knee, also ,for the life of me,I dont know why boxers and corners work some sort of code or sign, that when you feel things will go to heck, the corner stops the fight and you save face, the fighter can even do some theatrics jumping and getting mad at his corner. But yes,two different types of fighters,I remember One fighter said that once your are in the top level and you actually losing a fight, your mind starts going like "why am I here, why do I have to take this beating while I have money"I think that is what happened to Brook.

Boxing should be banned. There are other physical sports we can watch that do not involve such unnecessary violence. Only a few of the boxers really make enough money to even remotely worth the risk they are taking anyway. most of the times promoters and fans forget about them when they are in big trouble... it is sad to see guys like Gutknecht or Abdulslamov reduced to such a state

Maybe I have become a ***** but I just dont think it is fun to see someone being beaten to the head until he is brain dead. Can you imagine the drama their wifes and children go through? Boxing is no game, is literally life and death.

This type of guy, & a bunch of them all told, is getting in the ring every week on every continent all year round. And sh^t this isn't even bad matchmaking like it usually is with a 12-24-1 guy fighting a 20-0 guy. This is a 12-24-1 guy fighting a 7-11-2.

The fact he'd been stopped in half his L's is kinda disturbing & always something disturbing with these "opponent" types with a bunch of L's.

For sure there should be some structure at work in pro boxing where you can actually lose yourself out of the sport. I mean if you are a bad enough pro baseball player you will eventually get dropped from a MLB team down to a double A team down to the Mexican league down to a stocking position at Best Buy. In boxing you can lose 2/3's of your fights til your 38 years old like this guy & keep getting paid to box as a professional. That's a problem & ultimately bad for boxing.
"Whittom, 38, was stopped by Gary Kopas in the tenth round"

Imho journeyman like this should only be allowed to do the 4 rounds bouts

I don't disagree with you there, but we all know this happens all over the globe every day of the week.

I've actually said I've love to see guys move up & down the sport of boxing in tiers where they can only fight people in the same tier & where a certain number of rounds are standard.

              For a rough example:

Welterweights has about 2k boxers active iirc so it'd be like this.

              Tier A: 30 fighters, 12 rounds
              Tier B: 90 fighters, 10 rounds
              Tier C: 270 fighters, 8 rounds
              Tier D: 805 fighters, 6 rounds
              Tier E: 805 fighters, 4 rounds

And guys that keep losing at Tier E eventually get their boxing license voided.

I think there are too many longer round fights as is. I think only a select minority of guys should ever touch 10 round fights. And there should be less fight cards, but more quality & competitiveness in the fight cards.

Can't do it with how boxing works now, but yea for the original point you are 100% correct this guy shouldn't be fighting in a 10 rounder or I'd say even in the sport after being KO'd in 7 of his last 10 fights.

Or make the fights shorter. 10 rounds and let them wear the head gear. It would help with brain injuries for sure.

Or, there is always defense. The whole point is to limit the punishment you take and sometimes when you watch fights where head injuries occur, you see rock em sock em robots and thats what leads to it imo.

This is why Floyd was so cautious throughout his career and he preached this all the time.

Good post. The fact that a guy who was KOd in 7 of his last 10 was allowed to fight for 10 rounds (or allowed to fight period) just shows that boxing is a very unorganized sport and there wont be changes unless there are big time rule changes first

Great post and interesting ideas, and yes you are right, and maybe boxers who have more loses than wins should be classified as "semi-pro" and from that make special rules for them?

I heard that the very good prospects from Japan are ashamed to face journeyman for easy fights

But we know that it's impossible to control all events, sometimes they want to fill their night shows or they pick a boxer at the last minute etc

Not a good example but my grandpa was a local boxing promoter and at each of his events he offered some meal to two homeless boozers to fight each other for making people laugh, it was in the 1960s I believe, one of the homeless was an one-eyed named "Marciano"
