Comments Thread For: Kovalev Feels Boost With Russian Coach For Andre Ward Rematch

Sergey Kovalev has made a few adjustments after suffering his first career defeat last November, in his first meeting with Andre Ward. The fight, which took place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, saw Ward get off the floor to win a very close twelve round unanimous decision - and with the victory he captured Kovalev's IBF, WBA, WBO light heavyweight titles.

    December 31, 2016:

“Filter everything that I need and dump everything that I don’t need,” said Kovalev. ”Maybe add someone into my team. I’ve already started the talks with some of the specialists whom give me advice, whom might be useful for me and the career ahead. It’s going to be like a second breath,” said Kovalev.

Jackson is still with Kovalev right now, but it’s going to be interesting to see if he’s still there when the rematch takes place against Ward in 2017. With Kovalev talking about not wanting to “dump everything that I don’t need,” it suggests that he might be kicking around the idea of changing his training team.

“I’ve never used practices and tactics of U.S coaches,” said Kovalev. ”If I got to be honest, they’re all zeroes over there. Some think about them like they’re the best. These some are wrong,” said Kovalev.

Kovalev is talking about the U.S boxing coaches, and yet he’s still being trained by a U.S coach in John David Jackson. What does this mean? Is Kovalev going to keep Jackson or simply add the Russian coach Khromov to the team if he accepts the offer to work alongside his U.S coach?

Looks like there is some chaos and change happening around Team Kovalev.

Because he added a strength and conditioning coach to the team? Jackson is still head trainer.

The only change on the team is that they added the strength and conditioning coach, that's it.

Because he seems to not respect US coaches. Yet his head trainer is American.

Kovalev talks too much. Sometimes I think it's taken out of context when translated over and other times I just think he don't give a fk what people think.

I'm sure he respects Jackson if he stayed with him this long.
i bet if he loses again though he may make a change.

Kovalev needed to just change trainers JDJ let him down in the first fight, unless you are the person who thought ward won 3 rounds max. you'd know that kovalev lost at least 4 of the last 6, and in a way where kovalev took his foot off the gas more than ward out boxing him. "you should be up take the second half of the fight off"

... the conditioning is an important factor, but not the "main" factor when dealing with Ward... If you don't have a game plan which is able to strategically and effectively overcome Ward's "wrestling", then a conditioning coach won't help much...
