  • Comments Thread For: Abel Sanchez: Golovkin-Canelo Should 'Revive Our Industry'

NEW YORK Like virtually everyone invested in boxing, Abel Sanchez spent many days wondering whether Canelo-Golovkin would go the way of Mayweather-Pacquiao. Gennady Golovkin's trainer was worried that the public would become so sick of talking about why the fight hadn't been made, that when a deal finally came together consumers wouldn't be as passionate about their middleweight showdown. Now that their middleweight title fight is scheduled for September 16 at an undetermined site, Sanchez is relieved that the hypothetical phase is behind him.

We need series of fights, more of the best fighting the best. Less bashing whoever losses in such contests.
But NSB shows you that the sport is on the wain

Boxing is doing quite well in many countries including UK, Mexico, Japan, Argentina and several other Latin America countries. But it has seen better days in the U.S. The rise of football, soccer, and other sports, as well as video games, social media, and myriad other distractions, have relegated boxing to a niche sport.

I don't think any single fight or single boxer will revive it. The generations coming up don't much care for boxing as a sport. We will continue to see "boxing events" from time to time, but these will not revive the sport as a whole.

There was a PPV that sold over 1 mil the other week. How does boxing need reviving? The problem is people expecting Mayweather and Pacquiao numbers every PPV. Boxing is no worse than it was in the 90s or 2000s in America.

No it won't. Candelita goes into hiding after her beating and GGG maybe has a rematch with Jacobs before moving up to 168 where dudes will duck him.

Oh you don't know? Gigi had jezabel sanchez hold a press conference where he says hes ducking jacobs for life,as well as charlo & will only fight billy bum saunders in nobodygivesa***astan where he's gauranteed a gift if he loses then hell move up to fight smw nobodies until he retires. So that would mean he wouldve become "unified" paper belt champ with zero title defenses & 3 gifted titles.
But thatll be irrelevant when hes madeto look like jr 4 12 rds & left beltless with his pants down.

Most boxers make chump change, closer to minimum wage when you consider time spent training and out of pocket expenses.

Boxing is doing fine in plenty of places. By tomorrow, In the UK we will have had 2 world title fights in stadiums in the last 4 weeks to a capacity of around 120,000 people in total.

In terms of reviving boxing in USA, i think it needs big high profile fight that's actually a very good fight too. Floyd v Manny was a let down for a lot of people. I'm just not sure GGG v Canelo is the fight to capture the publics imagination in USA. Both are foreigners still and the fight still doesn't have that crossover appeal like Floyd v Manny. I think it will do excellent numbers, but it won't have that appeal like Joshua v Wlad had in the UK where nobody wanted to miss it and it's all everyone was talking about that weekend.

Who knows though, there's a long time to promote it. I just think it's still one that leans a bit more more towards being a fight for boxing fans rather than casual fans, in USA anyway.
