    Tarver

Why does it seem that quite a few people show disdain for Antonio Tarver? I know he talks a whole bunch, but so do many other boxers. Although he isn't one of my favorite boxers to watch, I totally respect him for coming back from drug addiction. That is not a small thing to overcome.

He beat up Roy Jones Jr. This is what he always will be hated for.

People dont like Tarver because many of them think that he is nowhere near as good as he thinks he is and there sick of hearing his mouth.

You can say alot about other guys with mouths but they have fully backed it up in the ring.

I like Tarver but many people, including myself feel that he caught RJ at the perfect time when he was getting older and losing all that weight. Many people feel that a prime RJ would kill him and they hate it that Tarver cant understand that.

Then he loses to a average guy like Johnson and he expects people to take him seriously as the top guy in the sport

I think that even if he didn't talk as much he would never be loved so to speak, he did beat RJJ with certain circumstances that allow ppl to discredit the win's. IMO though we had never seen the "great" RJJ ko'd like that and he predicted he would defeat him and that will always rubb some ppl the wrong way ( even if they don't admit it). It's the same way Holmes beat the beloved Ali and even though Ali was past his prime the media/fans never gave Holmes the proper respect, it didn't help that Tyson 1 of the most celebrated HW's came right after. I just feel like he's not the greatest ever and I'm not saying he's in the same class as Holmes, just that he receives the large amounts of hate because the way he will forever be defined. PPL can't really hate him for talking this much it's part of the sport and it's what got him his break with RJJ, what about the Hopkins and Tito PR flag thing? or Ali and Frazier and thing's he said? I love the fighter's I mentioned above just showing that talking and taunting doesn't take away from what's done in the ring IMO.

beezy, I disagree because Jones is not Ali. People loved Ali. Why do all of you keep saying that people hate him for beating Roy when most people didnt even like Roy. The majority of the writers and alot of fans were hoping Tarver would win that fight. That wanted to see the so called great, big mouth Jones get his ass whooped

I see what you are getting at. After he took that rematch with Harding when he didn't have to, and especially during that fight when he tried to get the referee to stop it because he didn't want to permanently hurt Harding, I had big respect for him. I sure did think that Jones Jr. was going to bust him up in their second fight though. Kind of like how I thought Hearns was going do to Barkley or Hopkins was going to do to Taylor in their respective rematches. Meh, what do I know about picking winners though. LOL Such as it is though, I'm just happy to be a boxing fan.

Thanks for the quick replies Born to Win and DLT.

            Best regards.

DLT, Ali only started to become a hero like 10 years ago. No one liked him before.

No one liked him at 1st but he was big way before 10 years ago and in the prime of his career. Everyone was on his side before the big Frazier fight and they all wanted him to beat Foreman.

The blacks and non war people loved him for not going to the war and he started being pretty cool after the Liston fight and when he was doing things with the famous announcer who's name has drwan a blank in my head right now.

Either way though, people definatly dont hate Tarver just for beating Roy because most of them wanted Tarver to whoop his ass

Ali was not always loved many liked him and many despised him and called him a draft dodger and a racist. He also went to jail and he was a ****** which was considered a "white hate" group and Ali called white's devils etc. Now many ppl feel that Ali should be admired for standing for what he believed even if it meant sacrificing his career so to speak and being arguably the greatest HW of all time. I never said that RJJ was Ali but they were both dominant fighter's of their era's and beating RJJ held alot of weight during his reign IMO. I was just saying that ppl focus on Tarver's big mouth and shortcomings more because of how he KO'd RJJ(he's not the 1 to talk alot). Just like I feel that Holmes initially wasn't liked or celebrated as much is because of the way he beat the aging ALI.

I think he is overated. I dont hate him because he beat roy jones. Styles make fights and he would have beaten roy 10 times out of 10 even in rouys prime. But other than jones he has not been impressive. but he continues to run his mouth. I am sure if he beats bernard he will believe he deserves cresit. Anyone who knows whats up knows he is a spot picker and is not trying to fight ligit chalenges.
