Boxing club?

Howdy, I've been browsing this forum for a short while, and I thought it's about time I made my enterance.
Long story short, I like boxing. I play hockey and lacrosse, but there's just something about one on one that I like. Not to mention how the sportsmanship is incredible compared to hockey. I am a junior in high school, and I'd love to join in the fun. However, the closest gym with a ring in it is about 25 miles away. That's a bit far for my tastes, so I was wondering if anyone ever knew of a school sponsored boxing club. With enough information I could advocate it for my school, and have the school sponsor it. I thought that it'd be very interesting having boxing matches, similar to wrestling/football/soccer games with two rival schools. I notice that, in reality, there is a slim chance of it ever happening, but why not try, eh? So any help regarding what I would need to know to help make this a success would be great, especially insurance info, etc.

Get athletic directors to support your suggestion, however first get parents approval and have the parent pursue the athletic director. My college has a judo club, I am going to pitch a Boxing Club idea to the Dean of Students and see if I can get the approval. It is always worth a shot, good luck.

I applaud your entusiasm with getting boxing into your school but i must say that it will not happen. Way back in the day the gym classes would teach boxing and let guys strap on the gloves and the colleges even had teams, but that lives no more.

I am not certain if it was a death that caused the schools to get away from it or a fear of an accident like that happening but schools just want nothing to do with boxing. Some colleges have teams or clubs but they are in no way affiliated directly with the schools.

As far as insurance goes with boxing you would be insured once registering with the USAABF. Any boxing match in the country, excluding the pros ofcourse, must be sanctioned and overseen by the USAABF

Funny thing, amatuer boxing is considered by the schools to be a much to brutal and dangerous sport to be involved with. Yet, every year amatuer football will account for more deaths and serious injuries per thousand participants than amatuer boxing. Go figure.......Rockin'

The Smokers in College were great, it was basically Frat v Frat. Participated three years going 2-1. I cant remember the referee's name from Sac...Hank something? He was the coach. At Sac State all the money went to the Athletic Department.

I decided that before I approach my school about it, I should have a strong backing. Not by the student body, but rather, our local p.a.l. I contacted the head trainer there via e-mail, and I'm now waiting for his response. Hopefully, even if they don't let us use the school, I could start something and use the school to advertise it. Hopefully.

all that to start a boxing program, im lucky that theres 2 boxing gyms in my city

I still need help! I've talked to the director of my local PAL, and he suggested I talk to the pricipal of my school, and possibly the superintendant. But, before I can present my case, I like to be well prepared. I have found a website that shows the number of hospital visits for each sport in 1998. I found it usefull, but it's slightly inaccurate because doesn't show the number of participants. (Sporting Statistics) I also found an article about a group of men who competed for their high school boxing team (1944). I plan on using this to show the relationships it builds, the pride, and most importantly for my battle, how the sport was safe enough then. I also plan on contacting this Missouri State High School Activities Association, as soon as I finish this post. I'm posting because I still need help. Hopefully someone out there could help me with this. If this becomes a reality, though it's unlikely, it'd easily be the largest political battle won by us, and it'd help spread the sport.

It would be a long hard process to make happen, I admire that you are enthusiastic about it. Your key would to get an important person in the related field to present your case rather than you yourself. You need someone with credibility to back up your claims.

Starting something yourself would be even harder, You could post bulletins on your school board and various other things but if you are boxing you HAVE to have a license and be registered and insured for everyone involved. To even get licensed in my state for regulating boxing is 5000 large and that doesnt even count insurance....

This explains why a lot of promoters and boxing shows are not displayed. Thats another reason why a lot of the boxing events are on indian casino ground so they can waive a lot of the fees...It's a crooked business.

I'm sorry, I thought I posted last night, I woke up this morning to check it, and I thought wrong. Last night I included what the Pal director offered for insurance. It was a one time fee of $30. It's almost too good to be true, but the gym he runs is also free. So you do the math.
