  • Comments Thread For: Gary Russell Jr: I Want Unification Next - Line Them All Up!

US southpaw Gary Russell defends his World Boxing Council featherweight crown Saturday against Colombia's Oscar Escandon but is looking at rival champions Lee Selby of Britain and Leo Santa Cruz. Russell, 27-1 with 16 knockouts, enters the ring before a hometown crowd in suburban Washington after taking the title by stopping Mexico's Jhonny Gonzalez in 2015 and retaining it in April 2016 by stopping Mexico's Patrick Hyland.

I truly believe Russell just loves talking in front of the cameras! Most of the top guys in his division is sign to Haymon just as is Russell. Why is he not telling Haymon to "line them up"? Don't get me wrong, Russell does have some skills but he's not on Loma's level. The rematch will never happen, mostly because Russell doesn't really want. Loma dominated Russell so why should Loma give him a rematch when Russell hasn't done anything since that lost? Russell needs to find out why Santa Cruz, Mares, Frampton, etc. are getting big fights one after another while he's still facing TBAs once a year!

He means in his one fight in 2018. Then his one fight in 2019 . Then his one fight in 2020 .Then finally he becomes undisputed champ in his one fight in 2021.

Sometimes its not the fighters fault, they have no following & hes at a low weight not much $$ in for a guy from Washington who's black. Im not saying thats the case here but rather that it in itself is kindve sad, boxing depresses me at times like in the canelo vs jr undercard there was a guy who only got paid a few hundred dollars on the undercard for a 1 million ppv fight, thats de****able & a human rights violation level of exploitation.

GRJ has no one to blame but his team for why he has no following. He has been matched so softly his entire career that when he finally stepped up and fought another skilled fighter he had no answers for it. Gotta admit for the competition he and his team have chosen to fight serves him right that he isnt making much money or that nobody cares when he fights. As for the fighter that only made few hundred dollars he was not forced to sign if he felt worth more aside from that he was not the reason the ppv sold 1 mil so why compensate someone whose name had very little if anything to do with why the PPV sold so well?

There's no excuse for him to be so inactive. He's still young, he's a champion and he should be fighting at least twice a year.

From what I've read in the past, and I'm not sure if it's totally valid, but apparently he's demanding huge paydays for fights and that's limiting the amount of times he can fight per year.

Just last year he fought Patrick Hyland for $800k. If he's demanding that kind of money per fight, then maybe he's content with fighting once a year.

He has skills, but he wasting time. He should have stayed busy. His brand is suffering.

This ****ing clown wants to unify titles.... Somebody needs to tell this punk that in order to unify titles you have to fight for the titles. This punk fights once a year and he's talking about unifying titles...
Every champion in the 126 division will whoop his ass so he won't be unifying shet! This fool don't want none of Mares, Santa Cruz, Frampton, Loma, or even Rigondoux. They'll all whoop his ass!

Not sure what to think about Russell any more. He got outboxed by Loma, but he showed some class and grit in there at the time, plus looked good against Gonzalez, but his inactivity has got to be stunting his development. If you look at the top 10, he hasn't fought any of them, so hard to judge now how good he actually is in the pack.

Beating Escandon won't do him any favours, he needs Santa Cruz or Frampton to really establish where he is in the pecking order.

Russell is championship caliber but champs don't wanna fight him. He has easily the most electrifying ko's in the division but doesn't get the benefit of fighting big names, he's like a championship gate keeper Leo, mares, selby nor frampton will sign with him
