Sanchez and age. To a certain extent that amateur style needs to be grown out of as well, because it just isn't effective in a real (pro) fight. A lot of it is energy burning shoeshine. I'm not a huge fan of Golovkin's style to be honest, but I can see why he developed in that way. It works in the pro game and most amateur styles don't.
First time I'm seeing this fight, but I see what you mean. Old golovkins punch selection was far more varied, and he would attack in combinations, instead of loading up on every shot. Also, and noticing that back then he had alot more head movement, upper body movement, and beautiful footwork. Hell, golovkin was shoulder rolling some of those punches. I think what happened is that Abel turned him into a seek and destroy style fighter, because he noticed how much power he had. If ggg would have gone with a coach that would have honed his boxing skills,we would be seeing a fighter with great defence, who can fight going forward and backwards, and still had legit ko power.

That's exactly what I'm trying to say. You're not seeing all these things in his arsenal now. He had to polish that style instead of turning into a pressure fighter
He was a baby back then. He was pro for what, 2 years? 1?
That style would not have made him successful. He was never very quick, so relying more on speed and reflexes would be a bad move. Subtle movements, technique and power are the right attributes for him.
Plus he is in his mid 30s now. Even if you look at Andre Ward, who's 3 years younger, even he's not nearly as mobile as he was in his 20s. Ward relies more on subtle, economical defensive movements. It's a natural progression of a fighter in his 30s
Reminds me of what happened to Lennoxs Lewis. Emanuel Steward commented on how they took a fluid boxer puncher and turned him into a stiff robotic power merchant. Golovkins style is based on Chavez Snr, but I think they should've retained bit more of the in and out style he had as a great amateur.
